Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 28, 2014
From the Pastor September 28, 2014
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saints Michael, Gabriel & Raphael, Archangels - September 29 The Holy Guardian Angels - October 2
Since we have two angelic feasts this week, today’s reflection is on the only Preface for Masses in honor of God’s holy Angels. The image above shows [left to right] Saint Michael, Divine Protector and Defender, Prince of the Seraphim, the highest choir of angels; Saint Gabriel, the primary messenger, entrusted with God’s most important messages: those given to Zechariah [John the Baptist’s father] and the Blessed Virgin Mary; and Saint Raphael the Healer, who cured Tobit’s eyes and many afflictions [Tobit 12:11-24] and presented many prayers to God.
I did not depict our Guardian Angels, although Jesus did assure us: “… every child’s angel in heaven always looks upon the face of my heavenly Father.” {C.f. Matthew 18:10] So if ordinary children have a Guardian Angel, why should we doubt every person has an angelic attendee, interceding for us and watching over us? Yet notice who the focal point and central figure is - and who are not highlighted - in this Preface for use on angelic feast days:
Preface: God is glorified through the Angels
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, and to praise you without end
in your Archangels and Angels.
For the honor we pay the angelic creatures in whom you delight
redounds to your own surpassing glory, and by their great dignity and splendor you show how infinitely great you are,
to be exalted above all things, through Christ our Lord.
Through him the multitude of Angels extols your majesty, and we are united
with them in exultant adoration, as with one voice of praise we acclaim:
The Angels: Our Heavenly Role Models. While Angels are of a different and much higher reality than we are, they still instruct us - by their example - how to serve our common Creator. Here are three of the main ways in which Angels ‘show us the way‘ that leads to heaven:
Angels Constantly Praise God. At every Mass we literally ‘join the Angels in their endless song of praise’ as we sing the Sanctus or Holy, Holy, Holy - the Canticle the Bible says the Angels endlessly sing in worship around God’s throne. [C.f. Isaiah 6:1-3 & Revelation 4:1-8:5] Scripture also says the Angels sang God’s praises when He created the world [Job 38:7], when He sent His Son into the world [Hebrews 1:6], and when Jesus ascended back into heaven [1 Timothy 3:16.]
However, just as the Sanctus ends and the Mass goes on - and the Mass eventually ends and life goes on - we must keep the hymn of praise going in the way we live our life! And we must learn from the fallen Angels [aka ‘Devils’] to keep God the center of our life … or else!
Angels Share God’s Word With Others. While the Archangel Gabriel had the unique honor of revealing God’s plan of salvation to our Blessed Mother, all Angels direct everyone’s attention to God and to His Christ. As did the Angels on that first Christmas night, we must help all know and see that ‘Jesus is the reason for the season’ as the saying goes. As Angels pointed to His empty tomb and declared, ‘He is Risen!’ we must stand in the face of death and proclaim that Christ is risen and living among us. And just as the Archangel Raphael brought hope and comfort to those in need of healing, so must we!
Angels Keep Watch Over Others. As Israel journeyed through the desert, the Archangel Michael defended and protected them; now he safeguards the Church. Many say the Father sent Michael to strengthen Jesus during His distress in the Garden of Gethsemane [Luke 22:43.] And as I noted above, Jesus said every little one has a Guardian Angel. To whom can you be like a Guardian Angel? Do you always defend and protect the Church? Does the way you pray and sing at Mass truly give angelic praise and honor to God’s majesty and glory?
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder
