Chronologies and Timelines• A chronology is a list placing events or actions in the order in which

they occurred. A timeline is a graphical representation of the same which also shows the time between events.

• This analytical tool is useful when it is important to understand the timing and sequence of events or actions, as well as to identify key events and gaps. This event also aids in determining patterns and correlations between events.

• Step One: As information on a particular event is researched, ensure the relevant information is listed in the date or order in which it occurred.

• Step Two: Find intelligence gaps and fill in periods for which there is no information. Determine if events outside the timeline could have influenced activities in the timeline.

• Step Three: If preparing a timeline, synopsize the data along a line. The sides of the line can be used to distinguish between types of data.
