A NOTE FROM FATHER ANDREW
Dear Parish Family,
I pray that you are using your Advent time well and spending some quiet time to pray for the strengthening
of the virtue of HOPE in your life. Remember what I shared last week in the homily if we want HOPE we
have to fight for it. Please consider signing up for Jingle Jam, Greeter, and Eucharistic Minister for the
Christmas Masses. Many people will be visiting us during this time of year and we want our warm wel-
come to be present when they enter through our doors.
I want to thank the Art & Environment Committee again for preparing the worship space for the Advent
Season. Many who visited last weekend expressed how beautiful the church looks. Thank you for all you
do to create the environment which helps us worship God. Don’t forget to visit the Giving Tree in the Atri-
um, take a tag and give a gift to a SVDP family or New Lisbon resident.
“Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” John the Baptist does not mince words. He tells it like it is.
When the hypocritical Pharisees and Sadducees show up piously for baptism, John calls them out, saying,
“You brood of vipers!” Not welcoming words, to say the least. Then he tells them that being part of the reli-
gious club (i.e., children of Abraham) isn’t enough. No, “ every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down
and thrown into the fire.”
It can be easy to join John in pointing fingers at those self-righteous religious leaders. But we’re usually not
so quick to point fingers at ourselves. On this Second Sunday of Advent, as we seek to prepare for the com-
ing of Christ, we also need to hear John’s solemn warning. How are we like these Pharisees? How have we
excused ourselves because we are part of the “club,” because we are baptized Christians, regular churchgo-
ers, better than others, or whatever justification we use to declare ourselves in good shape? How have we
failed to produce good fruit by being satisfied with a comfortable life and a routine practice of the faith?
What do we need to change? Where do we need to grow? How do we need to reach out and serve others, to
sacrifice sinful behaviors, to delve deeper into our love for the Lord?
John preaches today that God will “gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable
fire.” Advent is a gift from the Church—a time to renew our spiritual life by getting rid of the chaff in our
souls and producing instead a fruitful harvest. Now is the time to do this work. As John tells us, “Repent, for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
Have a restful week! See you on the weekend!

“Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” Matthew 3:10
Do you bear good fruit for Christ? Or, do you spend your time, talent and treasure constantly acquir-
ing more toys, clutter and junk. Our time, our talent and our treasure are gifts that God has given
us. What we do with them is our gift back to God. What gifts are you planning to give to the Lord
during this upcoming Christmas season?

ADVENT M ESSAGE S ERIES - CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
Christmas is the season of hope. The season awakens in us the deepest desire of heart that life could be and
should be better. We hope we will get what we want for Christmas, we hope the season will be filled with
cheer, hope that our families will get along with one another. We have hope and yet we also have fears that
maybe our hope is unfounded. It can be dangerous to hope because hope unfulfilled makes the heart sick.
Hope unfulfilled can be painful.
And so often we manage expectations and disappointments. We feel like we should give up because nothing good happens.
However, Christ didn’t come to lower our expectations but to exceed them.
In this series, we will look at the importance of hope as a Christian virtue and why hope doesn’t disappoint.
Week Two – Encouraged to have hope
Scripture: Romans 15:4-9;
To live with hope takes courage and endurance. The Scriptures have been written to encourage us so that we live with hope.
In this week we will look at why it takes courage to be filled of hope and how to find that encouragement in Scripture. The
Scriptures are filled with people who hoped in the Lord and saw that hope fulfilled.
Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., received the Diocesan Planning Commission's final recommendations as part of the Faith
in Our Future pastoral planning initiative.
Bishop will now prayerfully review the recommendations as well as consult the diocesan Curia, Episcopal Council and other
consultative bodies at multiple levels before making his final decisions.
Bishop O'Connell is expected to announce his final decisions on Jan. 25, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, with plan-
ning for implementation to follow.

Poinsettias Flower Sale
The Knights will be selling a beautiful assortment of poinsettias after each mass the weekend of December 17 and 18.
The shape of the poinsettia flower and leaves are sometimes thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led
the Wise Men to Jesus. What a beautiful gift to give this Christmas!

We light a second candle on the second Sunday of Advent to represent the hope of Christ coming to the

fulfilling a long-awaited promise. Today we confidently wait for the Messiah's triumphant return. Consid-
er these parish opportunities for prayer and preparation.
Recitation of the Rosary—each Sunday at 8:00 am, we pray the rosary. Join us for this contemplative
prayer time. In a season of such busyness, consider this time of quiet reflection.
Immaculate Conception of Mary - Thursday Dec. 8 9:00am and 7:00pm

fears. Put your fears to rest and come and celebrate God’s forgiveness. This will be one of just two Rec-
onciliation services offered in our area this Advent. The other service will be at St Joan of Arc on De-

storytelling. Children will depart from the main worship space at the beginning
