THE DECORATION OF THECHRISTMAS TREE IS THE ESSENCEOF CHRISTMAS. THE CUSTOM INGREECE HAS FOREIGN ORIGIN ANDWAS IMPORTED BY THE BAVARIANS,THE FIRST TREE WAS DECORATEDIN THE PALACE OF KING OTHONIN 1833 AND THEN IN ATHENS.SINCE WORLD WAR II , ALL GREEKHOUSES DECORAT E THE TREEWITH COLOURED BALLS.

Christmas day lunch. Greeks use to go to the church on christmas

early in the morning. Some years ago, theyused to eat chicken soup when they werereturning from the church. Nowadays they eatturkey , lamb, pork, salads and they drink redor white wine.However, several areas in the country keep

the custom in eating chicken soup, especiallyin our area, Thessaly.

CHRISTMAS CAROLSWho doesn’t sing carols as a child!In Greece, children sing the carols on christmaseve and on new year’s eve, going from house tohouse. People give them tips and wishes forchristmas and the new year’s day. The childrenuse some instruments to play the carols, liketriangle.

we make.Tradition says that he wanted to return to the peopleof the province, precious jewels that had been givento him. (He was going to give these jewels to the

Roman officials who threatened to destroy theregion). The Romans got away from the area withouttaking the jewels. He wanted to return the jewels,but he didn’t know which jewels belonged to whom.Therefore, he ordered to put each of them in a pieand to share the pies to the people. So, everyone

took a pie with a jewel inside.

MAkE WITH A COIN IN IT ,ON NEWYEAR’S EVE AND WE CUT AND SHAREIT SHORTLY AFTER THE NEW YEARGHANGE. WE DO IT AS A MEMORY OFSAINT VASILIOS PIES.

The cards are displayed primarily the birth ofChrist in the manger, the three wise men with the gifts, angelsand stars! The wish is: “Merry Christmas and a Happy NewYear”.In Greece , the cards were presented in the early 20th centuryby Greek immigrants in the United States and Australia.
