ChoiceUnlimited. WELCOME

3

WelcomeWelcome to LCiL’s third Choice Unlimited Directory whichfollows the event held at the Tigers Stadium Leicester onthe 9th of April.

Choice Unlimited as an event has begun to be recognised in many areas of theCountry by disabled people and disabled people’s organisations as a mechanism thattruly delivers assured choice in these very difficult times.

I hope for those of you who attended the day, it went a long way to answering themany questions you may have regarding your own future care needs or that of a lovedone or friend. As always we have endeavoured to work in partnership with manyorganisations to offer the widest remit possible on the day but also within this directory.

For the more observant of you reading this, you may have noticed that the documenthas changed its name from Event Guide to Directory. This was as a result of thefeedback we have received from many of you here in Leicester and Leicestershire whosaid that whilst the event is a great day and delivers so much, something like a directoryto take away from the event would be useful when looking for services and products.

The directory will be available online and hard copies will be circulated throughoutthe city and county to ensure anyone unable to attend Choice Unlimited can still takefull advantage of the information provided.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff at Leicester City Council who havehanded these out in their “bucket loads” over the last year and we hope that this greatwork will continue with this new directory.

In closing, I hope you see Choice Unlimited as a portal to the delivery of your needs, may that be social, employment, education, employment or health.

I wish you all the best in 2014.

The NHS-funded teams, set up in 2010, see around 3,500people a year and make sure veterans (including Reservistswhen not mobilised) and their families get the right treatment - bethat from a GP, hospital, mental health service or other charities.

The ten teams are sited all over the country and include a rangeof health workers such as full time doctors, nurses, psychiatristsand family relations professionals. They take self-referrals fromveterans who are welcomed, assessed and work to develop arelevant treatment plan.

NHS England took over the running of health services for thearmed forces last April and has been working with partnerssuch as the MOD, charities and the Department of Health, toimprove services available for veterans as well as raisingawareness of veteran mental health problems within the healthand ex-military communities.

With the development of this National Veterans Mental HealthNetwork, more mental health professionals within the NHSwho understand the nature of service life are now able tosupport veterans in accessing the care and support they need.

Kate Davies OBE, NHS England’s Head of Public Health,Armed Forces and their Families and Health & Justice, said:“NHS England welcomes the opportunity to ensure no ex-serviceman or woman is disadvantaged and we continue todevelop veteran-specific services.”

“This is part of our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. We are here, we are listening and we are working hard toimprove these services; we want to help people access them aseasily as possible – the right service in the right place at theright time.”

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have similar schemes setup to enhance access to mental health services, includingfunding for community outreach services.

To access your local service visit NHS Choices.

Veterans who have had mental health issues post-service arealso able to get support through the Veterans and ReservesMental Health Programme (VRMHP) based in Nottinghamshire(DCMH Chetwynd Barracks, Chilwell, Nottingham, NG9 5HA -Helpline: 0800 0326258 - Email: aphcsedcmhchl-vrmhp@mod.uk). This MOD service provides mental health assessmentsfor those veterans and reservists deployed since 1982.

There are other access points available such as the CombatStress National Telephone Helpline - 0800 138 1619. The freeVeterans Mental Health App (search apple or android store forthis title) includes help and guidance on key mental healthconditions and also features videos of veterans telling their ownstories about their mental health problems and journeys torecovery, also the Big White Wall to “talk and share” online,www.bigwhitewall.com
