"CHIKYU", a deep sea dril l ship, was delivered to the
J apa n Agency for Marin e-Ea rth Science an d Techn ology
(JAMSTE C) in J uly 2005. Const ru ction of "CHIKYU",
featuring the latest technology in this f ield, opens up a
new era of deep sea dril l ing, with a scient ific dri l l shipadopting th e r iser dr i l ling meth od for the very first t ime
in th e world. This scientif ic dri l l ship was bu il t for the
pur poses of clar ifying long-time environmen ta l chan ges

The h oist ing equipmen t for l i ft ing a nd lower ing the
drill pipe, the r iser pipe and th e Blow-out Pr eventer (BOP)
is inst alled in th e derrick. The ship ha s been engineered
to operat e in severe environmen tal conditions, a nywhere
in th e world. It is a lso int ended t o be capa ble of riser drill-
ing in deeper water and of achieving a dr i l l ing depth,
deeper th an ever before. Through a nalysis of the balance
between the hu l l mot ion a nd t he weight /ver t ical vibra-
tion/strength of the su spended sub-sea equipment u nder
these conditions, th e rat ed load of the derrick and hoist-
ing equipmen t (Traveling Block, Crown Mount ed Hea ve
Compensa tor (CMC), Riser H and l ing E quipment , Wire
Rope, etc.) of th is ship wa s designed t o be 1 250 tons, th e
world's largest , in cont ra st t o that of most other s imilar
oil drill ships, which is approximately 907 tons. Accord-
ingly, the d errick an d hoisting equipment of this s hip were
specially developed as u p-rated versions, the stren gth of
which ha s been confirmed. Good operabil i ty an d safetyfeatu res h ave also been achieved taking int o consideration
equipment- to-equipment inter face, equipment layout ,
equipment a utomat ion an d so forth .

During dr il ling operation, if th e pipe is suspen ded on
the dril l floor using a wedge known as 'slips' , high st ress
is generat ed which mak es th e deep dr i l l ing impossible.
For this reason, existing scientif ic dri l l ships adopt the
meth od of sus pendin g the pipe by using two elevators
alter na tely. However, al l work (including at ta ching an d
detaching) i s performed ma nu al ly using two elevators.
In t he cas e of "CHIKYU", however, a t ru e du al elevator
system for th e integra ted cont rol and operat ion of th e
two elevators ha s been developed an d adopted. This sys-
t em a utomat i ca l ly de tect s t he work be ing done by th e
two elevators an d also their operat ing condition a nd with
th e provision of various int erlocks on a ll equipment , in-
cluding peripher al equipment , this ena bles drill ing work
to be performed safely and efficiently.

The m ost impor ta nt pur pose of "CHIKYU" is to ob-
tain the targeted core f rom deep dr i l l ing depth. Sincecon t i nuous co r e s am p l i ng i s r equ i r ed , t he W i r e l ine
method ha s been adopted for t he f ir st t ime in th e wor ld
by a r iser dr i ll ship. With t his met hod, another cont ainer
called a core ba rr el is placed inside the d ril l pipe, a bit
wi th a hol low center dr i l l s the wel l and the container
lifts t he core onto th e ship. The featu re of this meth od is
to retr ieve the core with out l ift ing or lowering th e dril l
pipe, which ena bles efficient coring. The h ydra ulic pis-
ton cor ing system (HPCS) to obtain soft sedimen t , th e
extended s hoe cor ing system (ESCS) to obtain sl ight ly
ha rder s ediment , the rota ry core bar rel (RCB) to obta in
ha rd r ock, etc. ha ve each been developed for use, depen d-
ing on th e well .

To accord with i ts s ta tu s a s a "Scient ific Drill Ship",
"CHIKYU" adopts th e concept of zero wast e dischar ge toenable worldwide drilling operation. Discharge water con-
ta ining mu d is distilled an d filtered for r e-use a s drill water.
Deteriorat ed mud is cohered and th en dehydrat ed by pres-
sur ization, mixed with cement, bagged and tr an sferred by
supply boat t o an onsh ore treat ment facility. Cut tings ar e
t ra nsfer red by vacuum equipment , mixed wi th cement ,
bagged and tr an sported ashore. Treat ment of cutt ings is
impor ta nt for maint aining th e expected dr i l l ing speed.
Therefore, this tr eatment system was t ested on-board us-
ing cutt ings generat ed by actual dri l ling and a maximum
trea tmen t capa city of 20 tons/hour was confirmed.

"CHIKYU" is expected t o star t regu lar opera tions in
2007 as th e pr incipal dr i l l ship in t he Int egrated Ocean
Drilling Program (IODP). In th e future, th is ship intends
to dr i l l into the sea bed to a depth of 4 000 meters . To
rea lize this, it will be necessar y to develop deep sea dr ill-
ing techn ology incorporat ing new knowledge obta ined
