The Problem:

~ Students find the topic “Elements & Compounds” boring and uninteresting.

+Step 1: Define… What Is ChemiCards?

It is a card game based on a Secondary 1 Chemistry chapter, “Elements & Compounds”

ChemiCards was created and designed to help students learn the chapter, “Elements and Compounds”, especially memorizing the important facts of elements.

+Step 2: Discover…Our Inspiration

McDonald’s Monopoly:

Collect properties of the same colour to form a set

Similar to using appropriate elements to form compounds.

+Step 3: Develop… Research

We spent hours…

- researching on the properties of first 20 elements

- compounds the elements can form

- interesting and less-known facts

+Step 3: Develop… Game Design

Came up with many various designs.

Applied the SCAMPER method to improve on our sketches.

+Step 3: Develop… Final Card Design

Organized, with different sections.

Elements of the same group have the same colour.

The cards needed to form a compound , the amount of ChemiPoints it is worth and the properties are clearly stated.

A “Did You Know” fact is also added to the bottom of all element cards.

Modes:

1) Compound Mode (Default)

2) Group Mode

3) ChemiPoints Mode

+Compound Mode

Each player starts with 5 cards in their hand, which should not be shown to the other players. The rest of the cards will be in the draw pile. The first player to start is chosen.

1) Draw 2 cards from the draw pile2) Choose whether or not to play card/s (Action cards used will be put into the action card pile, while element cards will be placed up in front of the player.) **Compounds formed should be turned 90 degrees.. (Compounds formed in your hand do not count.)**

The games goes on with Player 2 drawing 2 cards during his turn. He will then (if he wants to) put down at the maximum 3 cards and then it’s the next player’s turn. This cycle continues, until a player manages to get 5 complete compounds.

The game ends when a player gets 5 complete sets.In this case, Player 2 is the winner. This is because he acquired 5 full sets before anyone else.

+Compound Mode

**In this mode, the compounds cannot be the same.**

**N-O! is NOT counted as an action.**

**Cards you have put down CANNOT be returned to your hands.**

+Group Mode

The Aim: Be the first player to get 5 complete sets (compounds).

To end: The game ends when a player gets five complete compounds. He/she is the winner!

**N-O! is NOT counted as an action.**

**Cards you have put down CANNOT be returned to your hands.**

+Group Mode

Start with 6 cards. (keep them to your self.)

When it is your turn, draw 2 cards from the pile.

The maximum number of moves you can do per turn is 3, and you can also not make a move at all!

Maximum no. of cards in your hand – 8

+ChemiPoints Mode

The Aim: Have the most number of ChemiPoints (Found on the top right corner of all Element Cards) at the end of the game.

To end: The game ends when 25min is up. ( The timing can be changed to your preference.)

**In this mode, the compounds cannot be the same.**

**N-O! is NOT counted as an action.**

**Cards you have put down CANNOT be returned to your hands.**

**Questions can only be asked by the player himself/herself. (Other players cannot suggest.)**

**Questions asked can only refer to one aspect. (Example, “Give me one property and one compound it can form,” is NOT allowed.)**

+ChemiPoints Mode

Start with 6 cards. (keep them to your self.)

When it is your turn, draw 2 cards from the pile.

The maximum number of moves you can do per turn is 3, and you can also not make a move at all!

Maximum no. of cards in your hand – 8

At the end of the game, only the cards faced up infront of you is counted into your total ChemiPoints score.

+Action Cards!

Element swipe

-When a player uses this card in his/her turn, he/she can ‘steal’ an element from another player.

Element Swap-When a player uses this card in his/her turn, he/she can swap a card with another player’s card of his choice. (The card must not be in the player’s hand)

+Stealing or Swapping Process For example, player 2 wishes to

steal player 1’s Oxygen card.

Player 2 will put down his Element Swipe card and flip the Oxygen card down.

A question will then be asked, based on anything stated on the oxygen card. If it is answered wrongly, the card can be stolen.

Compound Swipe

- Use this card during a turn to ‘steal’ a full set (a compound/group) from another player.

PICK-1:

- Player 2 uses Pick-1 on player 1. This allows him to pick any card from Player 1’s hand.

- (Player 2 is not allowed to see player 1’s cards.)

Action Cards!

I Ate Your Card:

- Use this card during your turn to “eat” another player’s card.

- You can take any card from another player and put it back into the draw pile.

I Made A Discovery:

- Use this card during your turn and all other players must give you an element card.

**The element card must not be from the player’s hand.** 10

Action Cards!

Sabotage: - Use this card when a player uses an action card against you to sabotage another player.

For example, player 1 uses Element Swipe on you. You can play this card on player 2 and “sabotage” him. Then, player 1 will have to steal from player 2, instead of you.

** Sabotage can be stacked** ** Sabotage cannot be used on the player that originally used an action card on you**

+Sabotage For Example, Player 3 uses Element swipe on player 1, intending to steal his Oxygen card.

Then, Player 1 uses Sabotage on Player 2, so that his Oxygen card will be saved.

Player 3 will then have no choice but to steal one of Player 2’s cards.

Skip A Turn:

- Used to skip the turn of the person after your turn.

N-O!: - Can be used against any action card played on a player. - Can be used on THIS, to cancel the first N-O!(For Example, player 1 Element Swipe on you. You can use this card to avoid that “attack”. However, if player 1 has N-O! too, he can use it on your N-O!, cancelling it.) 13
