CHEMICAL AND

PHYSICAL

Physical Properties are properties that can be determined without changing its composition (colour, odour, melting point, etc.).

Chemical Properties are properties observed only when the substance undergoes a change in composition (combustion, rusting, reactivity with acid, etc.).

CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Physical Properties:Properties may include: appearance,

texture, odour, taste, state, density, hardness, fusibility, melting/boiling point, boiling/condensation point, solubility, conductivity, temperature, viscosity, shape, size, lustre, malleability, optical clarity

Chemical Properties:Reactivity, combustibility, specific

reactions with certain elements or compounds, resistance to change (cleaning solutions, paint stripper, etc.)

CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Physical Change The composition of the substance remains the same and no new substances are made. (Object melts, boils, conducts electricity, etc)

Chemical ChangeAlways accompanied by a change in the starting substance and the production of one or more new substances. (A gas or precipitate is formed, colour changes, a new smell is produced, etc.)

A burning candle smokes X X

A metal block is shiny

The density of a metal is 78 g/cm3

5 g of sodium reacts with 20 mL of water

Copper bends easily

Bubbles are seen when magnesium is placed in acid

A steel magnet has 15 mT of magnetic field strength
