ProcedureIntroduction

Begintheactivitybyaskingstudentstodefinetheword“honor”.Recordtheirresponsesontheboard.

Note:Ifyourstudentsdonotmentionthedifferencebetweenbeinganhonorableperson(actingwithintegrity,demonstratingtrustworthiness,etc.)andhonoringaperson,event,objectoraction(celebratingabirthday,awardingacertificateforajobwelldone,etc.),youwillneedtopromptthemtodoso.

Direct Instruction (I do)1. Explaintoyourstudentsthateveryyear,peoplelivingintheUnitedStatescelebrateholidaystohonor aspecialperson,event,objectoraction.

2. UsingtheAmericanHolidaysteacherhandoutasaguide,listafewholidaysontheboardandtalkout loudasyouthinkofwho/whatthedayishonoring.

• Ex.MartinLutherKingJr.DayhonorsMLK,whofoughttowincivilrightsforallpeople.NewYear’s Dayhonorsthestartofanewyear.

Project and PurposeStudentswillidentifymembersofthecommunitythatprovideservicesthataffectallofusanddesignapennantintheirhonor.

Guided Exploration (We do)1. Writeseveralimportantdaysontheboardandhavestudentspairwithapartnertodiscusswho/what thedayhonors.

2. Callonafewstudentstosharetheirresponsesandrecordthemontheboardforeachholiday.

3. Explaintoyourstudentsthatseveralpeoplewithintheirlocalcommunitydeservetobehonoredfor thewaysinwhichtheyserveothersorfortheheroicactstheyperform.Offeroneexamplefromthe listbelowandthensolicitadditionalideasfromyourstudents.Recordstudentresponsesonthe board,alongwithwhyeachpersondeservestobehonored.

Independent Practice (You do)1. Explaintoyourstudentsthattheywillworktogetherasaclasstocreatea“BannerofHonor”praising individualswhoservethelocalcommunity.Eachstudentwilldecorateapennantthathonorstheir chosenperson.Thepennantswillbeconnectedwithastringtocreateabanner.

2. Allowstudentstochoosewhichindividualorgrouptheywishtohonorbyreferringtotheclasslistand passoutthePennant Outlinehandout.

3. Instructeachstudenttowriteontheirpennantatleastonesentenceexplainingwhyheorsheis honoringtheindividualorgroup.

ConclusionHavestudentsexplaintheirpennantsaloudasyouattachittothestringandcreatethebanner.Askstudentshowtoday’sactivityhelpedthemunderstand“honor”.
