What is Physical Activity?

What is Exercise?

Any movement that works the larger musclesof the body, such as arm, leg and back muscles.

Physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive, and that results in improvements in fitness.

Physical activity can take several forms:It may be recreational, as in the case

of sports, dancing, swimming, weight training, and other leisure-time activities.

It may be incidental, such as doing household chores, working at a part-time job, or volunteering for a neighborhood cleanup program.

Why are Physical Activity and Exercise Important?

Regular physical activity and exercise help keep your body physically fit.

Physical fitness – the body’s ability to carry out daily tasks and still have reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands.

To achieve total or personal fitness a person should try to:Maintain acceptable levels of physical fitnessParticipate in regular physical activityEat nutritious foodsSleep 8 to 9 hours each nightHave regular medical checkupsMaintain and appropriate weightAvoid harmful substances, such as tobacco,

alcohol, and other drugs.
