CHAPTER 7 PAINTING REVIEW

Paint = pigment (powdered color) + medium (liquid binder)

Support – canvas, paper, wood, wall, etc. to which paint is applied

Ground – a primer added to a support to prepare the surface for painting

Encaustic – pigment + wax or resin mediumArtists can create a richly textured and layered surface

Fresco – pigments + water applied to plasterUsually a wall painting technique; requires careful planning

Tempera – pigment + water and egg yolk (traditional medium)Very permanent; color lasts a long time

Oil – pigment + linseed oilUsually used on wood or canvas with a gesso groundDries slowly; colors can be blended subtly

Watercolor – pigment + water and gum arabicColors are transparent; can be layered

Gouache – watercolor with white pigment added for opacityColors are more vivid than with watercolor

Acrylic – pigment + acrylic resin (plastic)Very permanent; also versatile

Collage – a mixture of painting mediums and real objects glued to painting surface
