Chapter 4
A French Colony in a British Empire
• 1764 – Great Britain starts a conflit with the Thirteen Colonies by imposing many taxes on them in order to pay for the debt from the Seven Years’ war. (p. 79)
• The taxes were levied on imported goods like sugar, cloth, wine, tea and coffee.
• The Thirteen Colonies did not think it was fair to have to pay, since they weren’t represented in the British government and hadn’t approved these taxes.
Boston Tea Party
• 1774 – Great Britain announces the Quebec Act to try and satisfy the needs of the Canadiens and to get their loyalty in case of a rebellion by the Thirteen Colonies.
• 1755 – The Thirteen Colonies begin the American Revolutionary War (The War of Independence). They want to separate from Britain and become their own country.
• Those who want independance from Britain are called Patriots.
• American troups attacked Quebec, but they are defeated by British troups and Canadian militia.
• Oponants to American independance were called Loyalists because they were loyal to Britain. Many began emigrating to British North America.
• Around 50 000 emigrated over the course of the next 20 years.
• 1783 – The Treaty of Paris recognized the independance of the Thirteen Colonies which became the United States of America.
