Attend. Support. Engage.
The Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce strives to be the
premier representative of the Hibbing area business community,
driven and supported by motivated volunteers and professional staff.
The primary mission is to create, protect, and enhance a healthy
business environment for the benefit of our members and the entire
community. We serve our members through promotion, education,
information, and advocacy.
Why Join Your Local Chamber of Commerce?
American Business Magazine Says,
“Because membership in the local chamber offers numerous benefits and
keeps business owners on top of important, ever-changing issues and
trends within their community and local marketplace.
Not only that, but research points out that consumers are more likely to do
business with a company if it’s a member of their local chamber of com-
merce.”

What is a Chamber of Commerce?
The Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Says,
“A chamber of commerce is an organization of businesses seeking to
further their collective interests, while advancing their community, region,
state or nation. Business owners in towns, cities and other territories
voluntarily form these local societies /networks to advocate on behalf
of the community at large, economic prosperity and business interests.”

Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce Mission Statement
A Message from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce
Work begins now on 2018 legislative agenda
The 2017 Legislature is history, and the 2018 session won’t convene until February.
Contentious debates over important public policies at the Legislature are the last
thing on most people’s minds as we all enjoy Minnesota summer in its full glory.
Summertime is a great opportunity to connect with your legislators and explain
firsthand the impact of their votes to ensure that Minnesota is ready for the future—
ready for change and ready to grow. You have their full attention and the chance to connect them at your
worksites.
Your conversations will be most effective if you are armed with ammunition. The Minnesota Chamber of
Commerce 2017 Voting Record is a guide to help you evaluate your lawmakers’ leadership on our priorities
at the 2017 Legislature. The votes reported reflect the priorities of our 2,300 members across the state.
Each vote is on an issue that’s of daily consequence to Minnesota businesses and identified through
regular discussion with members and our local chamber of commerce partners.
We have much to celebrate. The 2017 session was historic in its accomplishments and one of the most
results driven in years. Many of the business community’s priority issues were acted upon and advanced,
better positioning Minnesota businesses to change and grow in our global economy. For a more detailed
summary of the Minnesota Chamber’s 2017 legislative achievements, click here.
Our successes notwithstanding, work remains to strengthen our business climate, especially in the area of
workplace regulations. Our recently completed Statewide Policy Tour gives us a strong start on these
priorities as we look ahead to next year. We’ll be back in many of your communities and connecting with
our local chamber partners during our fall policy tour as we present our preliminary priorities for 2018.
Minnesota continues to rank favorably as a great place to live, work and build a business. As we celebrate
our state’s assets, we also recognize that Minnesota needs to be ready for the future. We should be among
the top states for economic growth rather than being identified among the top states for cost of doing
business. The Minnesota Chamber produces the Minnesota Business Benchmarks report that sizes up our
business and economic climate and underscores those challenges. Our next report is due in October.
Our policy makers can help to address these challenges. The summer break is a great chance to explain
and show your legislators firsthand how the policies they craft have an impact on your daily business
operations.
Be sure to thank those legislators who voted in favor or your priorities. For those who did not, begin a
conversation about how their decisions impact your ability to own and operate a business here, and explore
how we can work more effectively together to make Minnesota ready to change and grow.

Tracy Promoted to Operations Manager
Upon Retirement of Flesland
8
HIBBING, July 17, 2017—This month MDI announced that Gary Flesland
will retire as Operations Manager of the Hibbing facility after 44 years of
service to the company, effective July 7. Andy Tracy has been promoted to the Hibbing Operations
Manager position, filling the vacancy created by Flesland.
Rod Wood, MDI Vice President of Operations said, “We are sad to see Gary leave MDI. Gary joined us in
1973, as a warehouse supervisor in Saint Paul. He took a chance, moved his family up North, and has
been the only operations manager to oversee the Hibbing plant since it opened in 1992. It’s been 44
years in total. Gary’s made a real positive and lasting impact on the lives of many employees over the
years.”
When asked about retiring, Flesland said, “It isn’t easy leaving a company I’ve been part of for 44 years. I
have enjoyed MDI, and will always be part of the MDI family. It isn’t often a person is given the
opportunity to start up and run a plant of this size for so long. It’s certainly been a journey seeing the
changes over the years. I am confident in MDI’s future and know Andy will provide good leadership for the
days to come.”
In announcing the appointment of Andy Tracy as the Hibbing Operations Manager, Wood said, “We knew
Andy would be the right fit. Andy’s worked at MDI for 10 years in various capacities—line work, line lead,
employment service case manager, quality technician, and assistant operations manager. Gary’s shoes
will be hard to fill, but we have high expectations with Andy and look forward to many more years of
Hibbing success.”
In Andy Tracy’s new role as Operations Manager, he will oversee the Hibbing Facility daily operations
including manufacturing, quality control, scheduling, and warehouse operations. Andy is also the onsite
company representative on the new facility currently being constructed in Hibbing.
“I’m looking forward to building on the superior work Gary has done over the years,” said Tracy. “Only
good things to come, especially with the new Hibbing facility. It will have double the building space to
support more business and provide better working conditions for employees. Exciting times for MDI and
the Hibbing community.”

Recently the U.S. Forest Service heard us loud
and clear – one Range, one voice! Thank you to
every one of you who showed up to support
mining and demonstrate your passion for
northeast Minnesota’s way of life at July 25th’s
rally and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) public
hearing in Virginia.
Together, we let the Forest Service know how
mining has supported us for 135 years.
Your concerns echoed for the livelihoods of families, businesses and communities across the Range that
desperately need the good paying jobs and economic benefits that mining will bring. You spoke up on
behalf of the 900,000 K-12 students across the state whose education is funded by school trust lands
involved in the proposed land withdrawal.
We asked you all to show up in full force and make your support heard, and you delivered – but the fight
isn’t over yet. We urge you to continue to submit comments through Aug. 11 to the Forest Service voicing
your opposition to the proposed land withdrawal and its devastating effects on northeast Minnesota’s
economy. The future of northeastern Minnesota’s communities depends on us!
One Range, One Voice — Thank You for Your Support in Virginia
