2. Signal Processing and Image Processing Lab ( AC Lab H/W)
The field of signal and image processing encompasses the theory and practice of algorithms and
hardware that convert signals produced by artificial or natural means into a form useful for a
specific purpose. The signals might be speech, audio, images, video, sensor data, telemetry,
electrocardiograms, or seismic data, among others; possible purposes include transmission,
display, storage, interpretation, classification, segmentation, or diagnosis. Faculty members in this
field span the areas of digital signal processing, statistical signal processing, image/video
compression, analysis & processing, speech processing, music information retrieval and computer
audition.
Current research in digital signal processing includes robust and low complexity filter design,
signal reconstruction, filter bank theory, and wavelets. In statistical signal processing, faculty
interests include adaptive filtering, learning algorithms for neural networks, spectrum estimation
and modeling, and sensor array processing with applications in sonar and radar. Image processing
work is in restoration, compression, quality evaluation, computer vision, and medical imaging.
Speech processing research includes modeling, compression, and recognition. Video
compression, analysis, and processing projects include error concealment technique for 3D
compressed video, automated and distributed crowd analytics, stereo-to-autostereoscopic 3D
video conversion, virtual and augmented reality. Also, faculty members are actively involved in
the research and design of special purpose electronic and optoelectronic hardware for efficient
implementation of signal, image and video processing algorithms.
3. Distributed Robotics Lab (COOS Lab )
This blog is intended to document developments and events in the Distributed Robotics Lab of
the Delft Center for Systems and Control. We are located at the Delft University of Technology,
in The Netherlands and our objective is to build a demonstration testbed for the study of
distributed control and estimation techniques, multi-agent systems, sensor networks and
collaborative path-planning methods. Our aim is to provide an experimental platform for research
and educational purposes.
Our work spans areas including modular and self-reconfiguring robots, soft robotics, rapid design
of customizable personal robots, distributed algorithms and systems of self-organizing
robots, networks of robots and sensors for first-responders, mobile sensor networks, animals and
robots, cooperative underwater robotics, desktop robotics, and forming, moving, and navigating
sparse 2D and 3D structures.
4. RTOS and Web Technologies (AC Lab Software )
5. VLSI and MEMS Research Lab (HDL Lab )
To excel in various aspects of microelectronics and VLSI, encompassing materials research,
device development, molecular electronics, building complex digital and analog chips. To
establish strong research links with industry in India and abroad, and to participate in national
programmes for training manpower in VLSI
The explosive growth in microelectronics—enshrined in Moore’s law—has fueled a revolution in
the computer, communications, and consumer electronics industries. With the world
semiconductor market estimated at US$ 319 billion, the semiconductor market will exceed the
automobile market size by 2010.
IIT Bombay has a strong presence in the area of Microelectronics and VLSI. While the Electrical
Engineering Department forms the nucleus for research in the area, there are interdisciplinary
collaborations with faculty in the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering,
Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, and Reliability Engineering. Contributions by
the microelectronics group encompass physics and technology of devices, circuit design, and
system architecture among others. The group has considerable expertise in characterization,
modeling and simulation. An important part of the characterization and modeling work has been,
to model radiation effects in MOS devices and circuits. The microelectronics group has
undertaken national-scale projects (amounting to over US$ 15 million / INR 750M in the last 15
years) and has successfully transferred technologies to industries.
VLSI Design & Technology
The VLSI project began in 1987 with the establishment of a VLSI Design Centre*, funded by the
Department of Electronics, Government of India. The centre is now being supported by Intel Inc.,
US. Several chips have been designed at the Institute. This includes small-sized 3 and 5
micrometer nMOS test, and gate array chips designed for fabrication (including a radiation-hard
gate array chip), as well as LSI/VLSI level chips. Most of the work has been on MOS, but some
bipolar LSTTL chips have also been designed for commercial use, which are now being
manufactured and marketed in India.
Yet another achievement has been the commercial development of an Interconnect Capacitance
Extraction Tool. To date, VLSI activities at IIT Bombay have received funding to the tune of over
10 crores from the Government of India and industries.
Principal areas of research
• Materials research for VLSI
• Sub 50nm CMOS technology development
• Circuit simulation for design of modern VLSI circuits
• Mixed Signal VLSI Design
• Research on Asynchronous Systems
• VLSI Design and Networking
• Molecular Electronics using DNA, porphyrins and conducting polymers

Facilities
The Institute has excellent facilities for the design, fabrication and testing of CMOS integrated
circuits, including a Class 1000 Clean Room with all major equipment to make 3 micron MOS
devices and circuits, extensive measurement and characterization facilities, MEMS fabrication,
SEM and photoluminescence, VLSI design and simulation workstations.
6. Industry Collabarated Lab ( BS Lab )
7. Embedded Systems Lab ( WMC Lab )
To maintain the position and compete in the world stage, Digital Embedded System technology
is one of the key success factors. Embedded systems are employed to improve the efficiency,
productivity, and product innovations. The main purpose of establishing the Digital Embedded
Systems Laboratory is to provide a good environment for Electrical and Electronics
Engineering (EEE) students to study well. So each student would have chances to operate and
apply the equipment and instrument about the development of the software and hardware of
Embedded Systems. Digital Embedded Systems Lab provides students with hands-on experience
with building, programming, testing, and debugging processor.
The goal of this lab is to introduce students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) to
the issues in hardware/software interfacing, practical microprocessor-based system design issues
such as bus protocols and device drivers, and practical digital hardware design using modern
logic synthesis tools. The laboratory is equipped with 30 computer and 68 hc 11 kits where you
will be given the opportunity to implement, using a combination of C and the hardware to form
an embedded system.

Aim:
The group was among the first to develop active force feedback for assembly operations. Already in 1980
it developed learning insertion algorithms based on stochastic automata. It has covered virtually all
aspects of sensor-based robotics, from the high-level task specification down to low-level sensor-based
control, and applied the research results in a variety of industrial applications. In the last decade the group
shifted its attention towards service robots (behaviour-based mobile manipulation, shared control,
learning control), medical robotics (natural interfaces, haptic bilateral control), industrial robot assistants,
and active sensing. PMA has created several spin-off companies that are active in robotics-related
activities, has initiated several free and open-source software projects in robotics (Orocos, KDL, iTaSC
...), and has participated in dozens of robotics and control oriented EU projects.

Real-time systems are loosely defined as the class of computer systems that interact with the external
world in a time frame defined by the external world. Research at UNC in real-time systems spans
programming languages, operating systems, distributed systems, and scheduling theory. This research is
carried out by the distributed and Real-Time Systems (DiRT) research group.
