CENTRAL HOUSE BULLETINPage 1 of 5 02 September - 16 September 2012
READING— PSALM 15:2&5One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice;Who thinks the truth in his heartAnd slanders not with his tongue;Who lends not his money at usuryAnd accepts no bribe against the innocent;Whoever does these thingsShall never be shaken.
REFLECTIONThe post-modern mind has been described as a suspicious mind. It will not trust readily. For us engaged in the ministry of education, this mindset truly calls for a new and fresh approach to how we teach and how we facilitate learning. And the question needs to be asked: How do we inspire another’s trust? Jesus’ challenge and the invitation of Scriptures to us is to become persons of integrity— to demonstrate in our actions the commitments that we pronounce with our lips and nurture in our hearts. The Gospel is learned not as an ascent to a body of truth but by an encounter with one who is truthful and who shows in his life that the Good News is true. How have we inspired another’s trust in the learning process? Have we lived in a way that shows our love for learning? For the welfare of our students?
RESPONSEFather in Heaven, we are ever-assured of Your loving presence through the lives of people of integrity. Help us to win today the trust of those we shepherd by our lived example of concern for their welfare. Give to us a desire to discern well their needs; to walk humbly with them as a fellow travelers; and to empower them to discover their better selves. AMEN.

BEC HOLDS LASALLIAN PRINCIPALS’ FORUMSeventeen principals from the different DLSP schools across the country gathered for a two-day forum on 21-22 August at the Parmenie in De La Salle Zobel. In his opening message, DLSP President and Sector Leader Br. JJ Jimenez FSC, alluded to the benefits reaped from the conduct of the forum, especially in raising the standards for quality that the Lasallian schools are known for. He also punctuated a kind of succession that school leaders should be prepared for — more leaders are formed to take on future responsibilities in sustaining the Lasallian Mission in our institutions.
A brief tribute proceeded in honor of the outgoing principals. Words of affirmation were given alongside with tokens of appreciation for their involvement in the Commission during their stint in their respective schools. Among those honored were Mr. R. Villanueva, Miss M. Cruz, Mr. J. Sulit and Miss R. Dumagat. This was followed by a business meeting, which tackled specific programs under the care of the Commission, due for implementation this school year. The Principals also tackled matters pertinent to the implementation of the
K to 12 program, especially the modalities dictated by the unique orientation of the different schools. Dr. Miguel Q. Rapatan conducted a session with the group on evidence-based teaching and learning which served as the prologue to the benchmarking activities that followed from 23-24 August in three Lasallian institutions in Singapore. —Report by Ramelle Javier
SAA TEAM VISIT TO MONDRAGON, NORTHERN SAMAR
A team composed of Dr. Herminia D. Torres, Brs. Alex Diaz and Rey Mejias FSC visited St. Anthony Academy (SAA), a Diocesan School located in Mondragon, Northern Samar on 01-03 August. Two Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart, namely Sr. Digna Dacanay RSCJ (Principal of SAA) and Sr. Maribel RSCJ (Superior of the Sisters) were at the Catarman Airport to welcome the team. Accommodation was provided by the Sisters at Sophie’s Farm inside the Sacred Heart Institute in the town of Mondragon.
An orientation meeting was held by the team members to discuss the areas to be looked into. The purpose of the visit was clarified, that is, to determine in what areas the school would be needing assistance, to set priorities for the identified areas and to come up with a year-long program to address these areas. The members also agreed to make clear that the Brothers are not taking over in the operation of the school. Rather, the engagement/involvement of the Brothers in the school for the next three years would serve as basis for the Brothers’ decision in the future.
St. Anthony Academy was founded in 1964 by the Parish Priest at that time, together with some members of the Mondragon community, who were the principal stockholders. The founders established the school as a response to the growing need for quality Catholic education for the youth of Mondragon.
In 1987, the Bishop of Catarman asked the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RSCJ) to help in the school’s administration. SAA is an accredited ESC (Educational Service Contracting) partner of the government under the GASTPE (Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education). At present, more than 90% of the students are enrolled under the ESC program.

The team would like to thank the Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart for their hospitality and generosity. The team members appreciated the feeling of being one with the community as they participated in saying the prayers, partook of the hearty and nutritious meals and traveled with them to places of interest, most especially the SAA grounds. The team loved the living quarters located inside the awesome farm, where organic vegetables and other food sources are grown. In addition, the team wishes to thank the SAA academic community for their cooperation.
EDUCATION FOR ALLDe La Salle Santiago Zobel (DLSZ) shared school supplies and other learning resource materials to its partner public schools and communities through its Sulong-Aral Program. It brought hope and inspiration to the children, as well as their parents/guardians, to continue pursuing their dream for proper education, despite
the many challenges they have encountered in life. Securing accessible quality education has to be supported with other needs like school supplies, appropriate training for teachers, sufficient classrooms and learning facilities. Through the community leaders and the school’s contact persons, who properly coordinated with the DLSZ Social Action Office, this assistance for the children’s education was made and will continue to be possible.

PREMYO RIZAL 2012
PreMYo Rizal is a national essay writing contest organized by an NGO, MyRizal, in partnership with the Department of Education. It seeks to build awareness among the youth on the heroic virtues of our national hero. The co-founders of MyRizal are Ms. Liza Bayot, a descendant of Rizal from the Saturnina branch, and Ms. Maite Gallego. The contest is open to all grade school and high school students in the Philippines.
De La Salle Philippines is encouraging participation of students from our network. Last year, a student from DLSZ was a finalist in the contest. This year, we hope that at least one of our own students will be among this year’s winners.
