CHARACTERISTICS OF

A CBM RESERVOIR

 Petrophysical attributes

Porosity

Permeability

Gas saturation Predicts CDP when CBM gas production will start

CRITICAL COAL BED ANALYSES

 Borehole site Canister desorption

 Gas content analysis

 Desorbed gas composition

 Adsorption isotherm

Primary tool to quantify the volume and quality of gas to determine commercial potential.

Determines the total volume of gas present in a freshly cut reservoir sample(core)

Identifies the fractionation of gas over the life of desorption history to determine a total in situ gas composition and the need for multiple gas isotherm data.

Accurately determines the

volume of gas that can be stored in the pores through sorption at reservoir temperature and pressure.

DESIGN and DEVELOPMENTOF ADSORPTION ISOTHERM SET UP

A Giant Leap

Towards

CBM Producibilty Prediction

Adsorption isotherm study is an important determinant for

CBM production and basin simulation.

Langmuir Adsorption Isotherm Curve

• Global Tendering for three times and the set up could not be

procured

• Build up of AI set up suiting Indian geological conditions

through a CIL(R&D) funded project in association with IIT

Kharagpur

• Designing of the set up took time less than a year

• 70+ samples have been studied of coal/lignite fields

The unique feature of the instrument is that it can work up

to a pressure of 20MPa (Equivalent to a depth of

about 2000mtrs)

DETERMINATION OF CONSTITUENTS OF

DESORBED GAS/MINE AIR

The determination of constituents of desorbed gas is carried out by Gas Chromatograph.

Essentials of Shale Gas Play

 Thermal maturity and richness

 Tmax

 Gas in place(adsorbed gas)

 Frac-ability

 Pressure

 Water saturation

 Reservoir continuity

 Clay mineralogy

 Brittleness

Necessary quantified tests of shale samples

 Wellsite Canister Desorption

 TOC,Programmed Pyrolysis and Vitrinite Reflectance

 Gas composition analysis

 Adsorption isotherm Study

 Petrophysical attributes

(Porosity,Permeability)

Aids in quantifying gas in place

Defines organic richness and

thermal maturity

Establishes gas composition and

produced gas characteristics

Determines volume of gas stored

in the pores by sorption at

reservoir pressure and

temperature conditions

Defines storage capacity and

producibility

Shale Gas-Efforts seeded and Facilities developed

 Lab has recently created

facility for taking up Shale

Gas related studies

 A TOC test equipment has

been procured and is

working routinely for

measurement of inorganic carbon and organic carbon.

 TOC is the basic parametric

study to know the gas

potential in source rock in oil

and gas exploration

ROAD AHEAD The lab is fully geared up to take up detailed characterization

study of shale samples for shale gas potentiality

measurement.

For the purpose, Rock Eval 6 – the most important

instrument for shale characterization is under advanced

stage of procurement.

Porosimeter cum Permeameter for porosity and permeability measurement is in the process of

procurement.

One instrument assembly to study shrinkage swelling

behaviour of coal/shale samples for recovery of methane from coal bed is under progress through a CIL (R&D)

funded project.

MINE AIR ANALYSIS

Why is it required

The firedamp of coal mines is chiefly methane.

Methane is combustible and mixtures of about 5-15% in air

are explosive

Methane explosion occur when a buildup of the gas comes

into contact with a heat source.

Hence it is desired to control the concentration of CH4 to

less than 1%.

Mine air analysis will give the analytical data of

concentration methane which would ensure the safety in

mines.

SIS Analysis of mine air samples ( main return,

district return, isolation stoppings etc.) of

the working U/G mines

Mine air Analysis of U/G mines of CIL.

So far, about 4000 + mine air samples have

been analysed by the lab

Preparation of Annual Reports which are

sent to the respective collieries to have the complete backup of the analysed data

R&D/S&T FUNDED PROJECTS

1. An investigation on Adsorption Characteristics Of Indian

Coals and to ascertain recoverability of CBM from deep seated coal resources (Project: Completed)

2. Assessment of prospect of Shale Gas in Gondwana basin

with special reference to CIL command areas; co-implementing agency ARI from USA

3. Studies on Swelling-shrinkage characteristics of some

Indian coals to ascertain recoverability of CBM from deep-seated coal and shale resources

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

CBM lab, one of its own kind does pioneering work in India to carry out tests required for CBM and shale gas evaluation.

The volume of work carried out so far:

Gas content from desorption experiments. Total no. of boreholes taken up for field desorption test till date :

70+ boreholes studies in Damodar basins

Total mine air samples analysed till date : About more than 4000.

R&D and S&T projects: Over INR 20 crores
