HOW WE CATER FOR EC YOUNG LEARNERSWe make sure the dishes on our menus are tasty and appealing to everyone. By initiating simple preparation and production techniques using quality meat, fresh produce and the addition of some homely touches where applicable. We use the finest ingredients that have been sourced from high-quality local and regional suppliers who care about their produce.
A minimum of 90% of all dishes across the menu should be freshly prepared, and we ensure food is prepared and cooked as near to service time as possible and all the good nutrients are locked in.
Our philosophy is simple – we think eating freshly prepared food that is made with good honest ingredients, that looks good, tastes great and is served with a smile, wins the day!
MENUSWe ensure that the structure and content of all our menus promote the wellbeing of everyone we feed. We adhere to the principle of ‘getting the balance right’, which simply means consuming a varied and balanced diet that contains plenty of starchy carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables, moderate amounts of dairy food and meat, fish, eggs and beans and only small amounts of fat, sugar and salt.
We have included sample breakfast, lunch and supper menus over the following pages, which will give you an indication of our ideas and the style for the food we will have for the students and staff.
SALAD BARIn addition to the hot food option, at both lunch and supper, we will provide deconstructed salads for the students and staff to pick and choose the ingredients they want which helps go towards making meals times more interactive and fun. All salads will be offered with a choice of chutneys and a selection of homemade dressings such as yoghurt & lemon, vinaigrette, balsamic & olive oil and blue cheese in smart clean, labelled bottles or kilner jars.
All dressings, toppings and pickles will be neatly placed in smart containers to the side of the salad bar. Additional protein items will also feature regularly and will include a selection of or cold cuts, a traditional ploughman’s platter or homemade quiche.
PACKED LUNCHESWe believe that packed lunches need to be appealing, tasty and fulfilling. We like to add a nutritious twist to our packed lunches by moving away from the traditional plain sandwich, crisps/chocolate, juice and fruit offer. We replace some of these items with the following tempting alternatives that encourage a healthier lifestyle:
• Homemade cookies and cupcakes (reduced sugar and salt, increased fruitand fibre)
• Homemade sweet or savoury muffins• Homemade low fat yoghurt, custard and dessert pots• Mini bags of popcorn, dried fruit, twiglets, rice cakes and corn chips• Tray bakes such as flapjacks and brownies• Savoury tartlets or mini quiches• Salad meals in the summer to replace sandwiches• Deli sandwiches to enhance the offer• Crudités and snack dipping pots• Smoothies and milkshakes
