Welcome Bishop Edward Malesic
Bishop Edward C. Malesic, JCL
Twelfth Bishop of Cleveland
Cleveland’s new bishop, Edward Malesic, was born in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, the youngest of
four children. He attended seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus Ohio,
and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Harrisburg inn 1987. In 2005, he was named
bishop of Greensburg Pennsylvania. And this year he was named the 12th bishop of Cleveland
by Pope Francis.
Bishop Malesic credits his family for his strong faith.
Those who know him describe him as someone who loves
people, a good listener, who builds bridges of
understanding among people. He has served as parochial
vicar, pastor, youth minister, Canon lawyer and bishop.
His message as he comes to Cleveland is, “There are great
people in our church. I am blessed to meet and know
people who are so faithful to Jesus and love his Church.”
The motto on his episcopal coat of arms is, “Serve the Lord
with Gladness.” We welcome Bishop Malesic as he
becomes part of the Diocese of Cleveland ‘s faith family.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mass Schedule at Holy Martyrs
Saturday
4:30 pm (in the church)
Sunday
9:30 am (in the church)
11:30 am (outside on the lawn)*
Weekday
Monday - Friday at noon (in the church)
The 11:30 am outside Mass was added to
accommodate families with young children who
struggle with wearing masks. We continue to
encourage attendees to wear masks but this will
provide some flexibility for those with small children.
Please plan to bring your own lawn chair
to sit on during Mass.
We are fast approaching the time of year when
the weather can be unpredictable. These next few
weeks may be the last opportunity we have to
enjoy the Mass outside in the Pavilion.
*Important Note:
This Mass will be held weather-permitting !
If the weather is not conducive to sitting
outdoors, Mass will be moved inside to the
Worship Space.
Mass will continue to be livestreamed each
Sunday at 9:30 AM and weekdays at 12:00 noon

I Can Do That
The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his
boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains:
everything is, as it were a caress of God. Laudato Si’
Did you know that many critters ranging from turtles and
toads to songbirds and mammals and invertebrates rely on
leaf litter for food, shelter and nesting material? Butterflies
begin life in leaves and over winter as pupae in leaf litter.
Many of our pollinators rely on leaf litter to survive
the winters. That is why it is important not to disturb
fallen leaves until spring wherever possible. In our lawn
dominated properties we cannot wait until spring to remove
leaves from the grass but we can leave them in areas
that are mulched. In the spring you can just put new
mulch over the leaves or put leaves to good use in your
compost bins and gardens. Running over them with the
lawn mower will prevent leaves from blowing around. The
leaf and grass clippings provide both the green and the
brown material needed for successful composting. Spread
in the garden they provide a mulch that prevents the weeds
from growing. As they break down they replenish the soil.
Do not worry about these clippings using all the nitrogen for
decomposition. Only the soil touching the leaves is
affected.
Leaf blowers contribute to both noise and air pollution. If
you must use them, electrical and battery blowers are the
better environmental choice.
Leaves sustain life.
Don’t throw the gift away.

Life Night at 6:00 PM
SPIRIT started on Sunday evening Sept 13, 2020
after our Life Teen Mass. We are meeting virtually
and we have a great group of students along with an
awesome core team of adult leaders. The Life Teen
Mass is also being streamed which begins at 5:00 pm
and students are encouraged to join us for Mass.
The first night was an introduction and we talked
with our parents and students for the first half of the
session. We then played a virtual game with the
students for the second half. This year’s SPIRIT
session is going to start out with “Questions about
Jesus”.
SPIRIT is on the Holy Martyrs website,
Facebook and Instagram.

Food for Children and Elderly
In Eritrea, Africa
The Comboni Missionaries underwrite Feeding
Centers throughout Africa, providing basic nutrition
and other necessities to malnourished men, women
and children. The Center for which we are now
seeking your support is in Eritrea, in the horn of
Africa. Those fed are primarily children and the
elderly. The Center helps also with medicine and
clothing. Distributed foodstuffs include millet,
lentils, rice, milk, flour and sugar.

projects, please go to

Consider a Gift of Stock to
Support the Ministries of Holy Martyrs
In gratitude for all that God has given us, we, as
Christians, are called to give back to our community and
our church. In addition to the Sunday offertory, one way
of giving back might be transferring appreciated stock
to help Holy Martyrs continue its mission to lead people
to encounter Christ, grow in faith, and make disciples.
By transferring stock directly to our parish, you may be
able to avoid capital gains taxes.
For more information about what you need to do to
make such a gift, please contact

From visionary writer-director Terrence Malick comes this
story based on real events, about an unsung hero, Franz
Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World
War II. Although the Austrian farmer is faced with the
threat of execution for treason, his unwavering beliefs
and his love for his wife Fani and their three children
keep his spirit alive.
