oficinas do Estúdio Aberto, masterclasses e encontros noAnima Fórum.
Here at Anima Mundi, we have long beenliving in an intense mix of imagination andreality, through the infinite animated viewsthat we receive and present our audiencewith every year. Our screens contain all kindsof things, from the rawest reality (pag. 109),humor (pag. 146), horror (pag. 60), and love(pag. 157), to surrealism (pag. 64) and sheer
abstraction (pag. 134).Now we are also witnessing the inclusion ofour daily lives and our cities into animation, like in the film RIO (pag. 26) or even inJapanese animation (pag. 38)! Some peopleeven turn animation into their own privateand virtual world, interacting with it in realtime (pag. 158)!
There is so much information, so many
universes and so many fantastic planets(pag. 156) that come through here and aregone like meteors, that we have started towonder about the possibilities of holdingthem and preserving them somewhere. Isthis possible? After all, what is the past, the present, and the future in an animateddimension, where time is under control?
Meanwhile, welcome to our 19 th birthday, which we will celebrate in our own special
way: screenings, animated chats,Open Studio workshops, masterclasses, andAnima Forum meetings. Come in and watchwhile we create an even more fantasticfestival for the decades to come!

Amigos sempre retornam.

3. Você está desenvolvendo um novo projeto? No momento tenho várias ideias em desenvolvimen-to, mas nada definitivo. Compramos os direitos deum livro, “Ferdinand”, e estamos escrevendo o ro-teiro. Mas agora eu só quero férias!!
4. Quais animadores ou artistas inspiram você?Sempre adorei Charlie Chaplin e Buster Keaton.

In 1996 and 1997, Carlospresented seminars in computer graphics, already representing Blue Sky studios, from New York. In 2002, he was invited asa guest in the Animated Chat for the firsttime. He had just finished directing IceAge with Chris Wedge. He then went onto direct the Oscar nominated short GoneNutty (2003) and co-direct the feature film
Robots (2005), taking the next step intodirecting feature films on his own, withtwo huge blockbusters: Ice Age 2: TheMeltdown (2006) and Ice Age: Dawn ofthe Dinosaurs (2009).
Carlos Saldanha is the newest nationalhero, due to his feat of transforming his(our) city into the scenery and character ofyet another huge international animationblockbuster: RIO (2011). He will sharewith us, like close friends do, the bestsecrets in the construction of this hit film
1. What first spiked your interest inanimation? I’ve enjoyed drawing since I was a little kid.I used to create comics and stories, paint, make caricatures, and I also loved watchingcartoons. But my curiosity towards
animation only blossomed when I wasabout eighteen, as I watched shorts createdthrough computer graphics, especially LuxoJr., by John Lasseter*. I was fascinated bythe mixture of technology and art. That’swhen I decided to go for it.
*This film, as well as other shorts, will be screened in the “Pixar25 Years Showcase” (pg. 141)
2. What was the research process forthe film Rio like? Having been born in Rio, I already knew alot about the city, but I still bought dozensof books and DVDs, and did a lot offilming and picture taking around the city,so that I could show it to my crew, whichwas almost entirely made up of gringos! But this was still not enough, so I had tocome to Rio with a small creative crew, toget the “feel” of the city and experience
it in the same way as the character Blu.Sharing my emotion of being in Rio with
the crew was amazing. We even gotto participate in the carnival parade inSapucaí! It was my first time doing thatand it was a wonderful experience!
3. Are you developing a new project? At the moment, I’ve got lots of ideasunder development, but nothing definitive. We’ve bought the rights for the book“Ferdinand”, and we’re writing the script. But all I really want right now is a break!!!
4. What animators and artists inspire you? I’ve always loved Charlie Chaplin andBuster Keaton. The Disney classics, fromthe golden days of animation, are also asource of inspiration. Bambi, Dumbo andPinocchio are unforgettable.
5. Can you tell us a little bit about yourelationship with Anima Mundi? It’s always an enormous thrill and pleasureto participate in Anima Mundi! The festivalis an incredible achievement, which I liketo come to whenever I can! It has changedthe lives of a great number of artists whodreamed of working with animation, likemyself, and is still an inspiration to lots of
new animators from all over Brazil!Anima Mundi is just great!!!

Eu tinha tempo paraolhar, pensar, e me divertir.

David DanielsWhen he turned eight, David Daniels hadan insight as he and his sisters played withmodeling clay: while cutting a block of clay witha sharp knife, he was enchanted by the formsthat appeared in each slice. He carried thatimpression with him for fourteen years, untilhe went to study at CalArts and produced his
final project film, Buzz Box, in the technique henamed Strata Cut. The images fuse togetherand transform into other images in a rhythmicfrenzy, as if they were moving oil paintings. From then on, David began perfecting andexpanding his technique and the art of tellingstories through slices of modeling clay filmedframe by frame. He applied this technique toseveral of his works, such as the Pee Wee’sPlayhouse television series, Peter Gabriel’s
award winning music video, Big Time, andABC’s retrospective on Michael Jackson,Moonwalker. In 2002, David opened BentImage Lab with Chel White, an award winningindependent studio, known for its films andspots created with mixed media animation. In2006, Tsui Ling Toomer joined the company, ofwhich the Brazilian director Nando Costa alsobecame an associate in 2009.
Apart from his presentation in the
Animated Chat, David Daniels Will presenta Masterclass with a demonstration of hisStrata Cut technique (Page 164).
1. What aspects of your life convergedto make the creation of the Strata Cuttechnique possible?
When I was a child, I paid a lot of attentionto details and textural things. I was giventhe time just to look, think, and amusemyself. I could stare at light hitting lintballs on the carpet with my face sidewaysto the ground for half an hour. My motherallowed me almost unlimited time to play
with clay from the age of five, along withmy two sisters, Shelley and Cary, in a tablewe called Claytown. The germ of Strata Cutcame to me on my eighth birthday. We hadthe party, then went back to Claytown andmade a crude cake out of modeling clay. When my sister sliced it open, I realizedthat in the colors and shapes buried in itthere was a moment frozen in time.I had no idea of how to use it at that age,but I filed it away forever as somethingI vowed to return to. The time finally camewhen I went to CalArts, at the age of 22.This is when I sat down and methodicallysculpted and cut, and angled and slicedclay every which way, trying to developa set of rules, a vocabulary for the use ofthis technique.
2. What have you been working onthese days?
For almost thirty years, I have made myliving as an animator and director forcharacter and mixed media live action andanimation work. I developed and helpedlaunch the M&M candy characters, andI directed their animation spots, as well asother commercials, for several years.
During the past decade, I have been consumedwith fostering my own animation productioncompany. A group of great artists and talentedproducers make up Bent Image Lab. Alongwith my family, this intense creative clubhousetakes up most of my time. Sometimes Istill do a little directing, but just as often my
time is a blend of art, people, and businessdevelopment. There is one project that showssome promise: the development of a CG StrataCut, which demands the same kind of “mentalmuscle” and fits my way of thinking. It hasmuch wider possibilities than clay, yet verydifferent artistic restrictions and constraints.
3. Have you been to Brazil before? How doyou imagine Anima Mundi to be like? No. I have visited both Argentina and
Uruguay, but never Brazil. I have been allover the world and each time I am in somefresh new place, I feel the experience to bea kind of revelation for me. Anima Mundiis one of the biggest and best animationfestivals in the world. I am greatly honoredto be a part of its 2011 edition. One of thegreatest joys I feel is the reaction of otherpeople who have gotten something specialfrom my work. I hope to see that wonder in
a few new faces that are unaware of what Ido. I very seldom have time to visit festivalsor get away from my work, so this is a rareoccasion I passionately look forward to.

Shinichiro WatanabeJapan, an island where Animation has aspecial branch of its own (Anime!), invadesAnima Mundi once again, with the presenceof one of its most renowned and respecteddirectors and authors: Shinichiro Watanabe.Born in 1965, in Kyoto, he is greatly admiredfor his works, such as the iconic televisionseries that originated the feature film CowboyBebop , and the Samurai Champloo series.
Watanabe began his career as an animatorat age 20. He joined Sunrise studios as aproduction assistant, and became co-directorof Macross Plus , the continuity of thesuccessful Macross series, in 1994. Hebegan his career as a director with Cowboy
Bebop , the series that became a huge hit
worldwide and originated the feature filmKnockin’ on Heaven’s Door , 2001 (whichlater became known simply as CowboyBebop: the Movie ). In 2003, Watanabe joined the select group of Japanese directorsinvited to create their versions of storiesbased on the universe of the action filmThe Matrix, in the cult American productionAnimatrix . He was put in charge of twoepisodes ( Kid’s Story and A Detective
Story ), which helped consolidate his statusas an international animation celebrity. Hisnext work was a series that presented an
faroeste.

innovative format, remixing samurai traditionwith the modernity of hip hop – SamuraiChamploo , which premiered in 2004.
As a matter of fact, remixing is a key conceptin Watanabe’s mastery in harmonizing
music and image. It is not just a simplemix of styles, but a balanced and intensecombination of longstanding flavors, wherevisual and musical ingredients blend into arefined culinary recipe of a gourmet. Thesoundtrack commands his narrative, and therhythm of his scenes varies in intensity andstyle according to the dramatic moment. Thishas led Watanabe to recently start workingon soundtracks for other directors, an activitythat brings him a sense of pleasure andaccomplishment. In Michiko & Hatchin ,a recently releases series with sceneriesand characters inspired by Brazil, ShinichiroWatanabe, as a musical director, usesBrazilian music, of which he seems to be agreat expert and admirer.
Cowboy Bebop: the Movie , which wewill have the privilege of watching on a bigscreen, with the presence of the director (in
Brazil, it was released as a direct-to-video andDVD movie), is a film where each sequencebrings a different and sophisticated mixture
of space and urban sci-fi, American jazz (thusbebop) and western movie style violence. Each one of these sequences was plannedaccording to a specific hit song, such asSympathy for the Devil or My FunnyValentine , or musical genre, ranging fromsamba to heavy metal.
Watanabe once stated in an interview thathe would like to demystify the general ideathat Japanese people avoid expressing theirfeelings. To him, this was true only duringcertain moments and time periods, suchas the Edo period, a time of repression inwhich he placed the samurais of SamuraiChamploo . This is the reason why, in thisseries, he creates this contrast through theeloquence of hip hop.
During the current reign of Anime, it is clearthat the Japanese people, as quiet and shyas they might seem, have a lot to say. Soprepare your eyes and ears for the AnimatedChat with Shinichiro Watanabe, in the AnimaMundi 2011!
* The presence of Shinichiro Watanabe inAnima Mundi is a result of partnerships with
