Modified types of connective tissue Cartilage bone blood

1

This lecture will include:

Structure and function of cartilage-Types of cartilage; 1-Hyaline cartilage.2-Elastic cartilage 3-White fibrocartilage

COMPONENTS OF CARTILAGE1- Intercellular ground substance (extra

cellular matrix)2- Collagenous and elastic fibers embedded

in the matrix.3- Cartilage cells namely chondroblasts and

chondrocytes.

Perichondrium

The perichondrium:

Cartilage is usually covered by perichondriumThe perichondrium consists of two layers:1- an outer fibrous layer rich in collagen.2- an inner vascular and cellular layer which is also called chondrogenic layer. The cells in this layer are chondroblasts which are capable of forming new cartilage.

I- The intercellular ground substance (matrix)It is responsible for the firmness of the cartilage

-It consists of collagen embedded in a firm gel of proteoglycans and structural glycoproteins.

-chondroitin sulfate-chondromucoproteins

II-Cells of cartilage:

1- Chondroblast 2-Chondrocytes

III- The fibers Both collagen and elastic fibers are

found in the matrix of cartilage.

1- Hyaline cartilage

1-Hyaline cartilage:

Sites of hyaline cartilage

Constituting most of the cartilagenous skeleton in the embryo.

Forming the epiphyseal plates in growing age.

The costal cartilages. The nose, larynx, trachea and bronchi in the

respiratory system.Covers the articular surfaces of nearly all

synovial and cartilagenous joints.

2-Elastic cartilage

Sites:1- The auricle of the ear (ear pinna).2- External auditory meatus.3- Cuneiform and corniculate cartilages in

the larynx.4- Epiglottis.

White fibro cartilage

Sites:Intervertebral discTempromandibular joint
