Carnival to Cruise to Cuba

Frank Kavanaugh

Carnival Cruise Lines has added Cuba to its list of destinations!

Carnival Corp. is the first of its competition to announce the new location as a focus area for upcoming tourism!

This marks a big movement that will influence other cruise lines and airlines to include Cuba in their travel itineraries

Carnival’s parent company, Princess, as well as eight other cruise brands claim to be launching a seven-night, “people-to-people” tour to the island beginning in May 2016!

The “people-to-people” government licensing initiative allows exclusive trips to Cuba as Citizen Ambassadors!

This plan is however very much in the hands of Cuban authorities!

Without their permission, the seven-night excursions will not happen

The CEO of Carnival Corp., Arnold Donald was quoted as saying, “All of our research

suggests there is huge pent-up demand for the Cuba experience.” !

Arnold went on to discuss the demand due to the decades of non-commercial travel to the island from the United States!

People are also extremely excited to visit Cuba after President Obama’s decision to open up diplomatic ties with Cuba and loosen travel restrictions as well

There are still travel restrictions that will be in effect when traveling to Cuba!

There are in fact 12 approved categories that bind U.S. citizens if they choose to travel to the island without having a license in advance!

Carnival has labeled their new offering as being able to provide, “cultural, artistic, faith-based and humanitarian exchanges between American and Cuban citizens”!

These reasons allow Carnival to classify their travels under “people-to-people” travel, which lies under the 12 approved categories

An official itinerary has not been released for the voyage, but travelers can reserve a spot on the ship by paying a $600 deposit!

Fares will begin at $2,990 per person, plus taxes and fees!

This is drastically more expensive than other seven-night Caribbean cruises offered by Carnival, but there’s a strong allure for many people to become the first people going to Cuba!

Initially, there will only be one ship going to and from Cuba, however after the embargo is officially 100% lifted, additional voyages will be added
