quiet, and concerned at times, and other times she is fearless, and

adventurous.

So far Scat is about Mrs. Starch, whom all the kids dislike, and her mysterious

disappearance during a school field trip. There was a controlled fire that caused the

students and teachers to evacuate. Mrs. Starch disappeared to retrieve a students medicine, and nobody has seen her since.

Most of the students had been interviewed. But the main suspect is Smoke, the class trouble maker. Could Smoke really have

caused a fire just to get back at Mrs. Starch?

Carl Hiaasen has been writing about Florida since his father gave him a typewriter at age six. Now Hiaasen writes a column for the Miami Herald and is the author of many bestselling novels, including Skinny Dip, and Star Island. Hoot was his first novel.
