Special thanks goes out to the technology department who worked
endless hours organizing, arranging, setting up and taking down
everything needed for this fair to be a success.
The Bethel School District and its community is an awesome
place to call home.

Store Grand Opening
March 4, 2013
Students from Ms. Bradley’s Introduction to Business and Marketing class will launch the Grand Opening of the SLHS ‘Sentinel Spot’. The new student store will open its doors on March 4, 2013. They will start out selling Spirit Gear and custom embroidery items such as t-shirts and scarfs. Currently their customers will be students and staff of SLHS; however they hope to venture out to other schools and eventually the economy with their custom embroidery inventory.

Students were asked why they are taking this class. Here are some of their answers: “I plan to go into Business and Marketing” says Andrew Ludeke. “I want to learn the basics concepts of entrepreneurship”.
Wanieda Taing says “I was actually placed in this class and was planning to transfer out. But now I really enjoy it. We do a lot of hands on real life projects”. Alysea Dillard wants to open her own cake shop some day, “I think this will
help me in my marketing skills”.

FLL
FIRST Lego League
44 teams from throughout Western Washington advanced to the FLL State Championship on Sunday, February 10, 2013. Among the teams that advanced to the state competition included two teams from Bethel School District, Lego Elites from Shining Mountain Elementary and DawgBotics from Bethel Middle School. Our two veteran teams have been competing at the state level for the past four years. This year’s challenge was “Senior Solutions”. Teams explored the topic of aging and how it may affect a person’s ability to maintain his or her lifestyle and worked on improving quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected in their communities.
Both teams did very well at the State Competition, but unfortunately not well enough to move on to the national competition. Bethel DawgBotics placed 17th and Shining Mountain LEGO Elites placed 24th. Both teams exhibited incredible time-management and presentation skills. Their experience at the state level was invaluable!
Both teams gained priceless insight
from other teams, and can’t
wait for next year’s challenge!

The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their
mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard
"kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and
enter them in competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and
a committee of engineers and other professionals.
FIRST redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for
excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and
maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a
secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.

FIRST ROBOTIC Teams form
Graham Kapowsin High School,
Bethel High School, and
Spanaway Lake High School
attended the FRC Kickoff on
January 5th, 2013. At the kickoff
they received their kit of parts and
immediately began the six-week
build session. Each team, along
with their coaches and community
mentors have spent countless
hours building, programming, and
refining their robots. Tuesday,
February 19th was the last day of
the “build” session and the robots
were “bagged and tagged” and
wait for the Western Washington
Regional Competition, starting on
March 27-March 30, 2013. Total
of 64 teams will be competing at

encouraged to attend and support
our high school teams.
