My Hometown • I am from the capital city of

Kampala, Uganda.• The weather is ever warm.

It is not too hot and too cold. We do not have snow.

• The environment is green.• The country is

predominantly rural where most people live in villages.

National Culture• Uganda in divided into more than 60 different tribes/ethnicities.

• Each tribe speaks their own indigenous languages.

• Tribes have different cultural beliefs, norms, practices, ideas and procedures.

• Most tribes are socially divided into clans. Each clan has a cultural leader.

• Every child that is born takes on the clan of his or her father.

• Because there are many tribes, the country is endowed with many dance music, and folklore traditions.

Home Culture• Most families are extended i.e. the grandparents, their

children and grand children live together.

• Life is predominantly rural and preindustrial i.e. people depend on subsistence agriculture.

• Uganda does not have a national language. English is just an official language.

Dance • My Job: I am a dance educator, performer and community dance

facilitator. I teach dance to different communities and do dance performances in different areas and context.

• Necessary skills: Creativity, flexibility, time management, high degree of organisation, respect for other, respect for self, hardworking, teamwork, generosity

• Responsibilities: Organize lesson plans, create dances, attend rehearsals, meet your dancers or students, evaluate the activities of the day, plan for the following day

• Benefits: Build communities, cross cultural exchange, education, health of people, entertainment.

Exploring Creativity through Dance: How artists of dance work

Develop an a 5 minute dance piece that combines music and movement•Different individuals will take on different roles with aim to put together a production•The role will include playing different instruments and performing movement phrases•The performers will create the production together.•The performers will get a title (Brand) for the production•If time allows, the performers will switch roles•The performers will then discuss where that production can be performed and the strategies to market/publicize it.
