Quick Review of The Present Progressive Tense
Present Participle
The present participle is the –ing form of the verb.
It is formed by removing the infinitive ending of the verb: hablar > habl-
Then add the correct present participle ending: habl- > hablando = speaking
Present Participles
-ar verbs: hablar – hablando = speaking -er verbs: comer – comiendo = eating -ir verbs: vivir – viviendo = living
* There are only 2 endings: -ando and -iendo
( -er and –ir verbs are alike)
Give the present participles for the following infinitives pensar pensando thinking
buscar buscando looking for
salir saliendo leaving / going out
poner poniendo putting
dibujar dibujando drawing
ver viendo seeing
alquilar alquilando renting
escribir escribiendo writing
nadar nadando swimming
comprender comprendiendo understanding
jugar jugando playing
tocar tocando playing
Irregular present participles dormir (ue, u) durmiendo sleeping
sentir (ie, i) sintiendo feeling, regretting
You can identify an irregular present participlein the dictionary: Example: dormir(ue,u)
The second vowel in the parenthesisindicates the irregularity.
* durmiendo
decir diciendo saying, telling
leer leyendo reading
oír oyendo hearing
poder pudiendo being able
traer trayendo bringing
venir viniendo coming
But you cannot use a present participle alone in a sentence.
Yo jugando al béisbol I playing baseball. - Incorrect
You need a helping verb.
I am playing baseball
This is called the present progressive tense.
It expresses action in progress presently or actions going on right now.
But how are we going to express am in the above sentence?
Present Progressive Tense =Estar + Present Participle
Estoy – I am Estás – You are Está – He is
She is
You are
Estamos - We are Estáis - You are Están - They/You
are
Present Participle – alquilar – alquilando (renting)(-ing) leer - leyendo (reading)
decir – diciendo (saying)

Put it together:
Estoy dibujando I am drawing
Estás comiendo You are eating
Está saliendo He, she, is leaving
or you (polite) are leaving
Estamos apagando We are turning off
Estáis poniendo You are putting
Están viviendo They / you are living
Instead of the helping verb estar, you may also use seguir, continuar, or venir. Sigo estudiando para el examen. I continue studying for the test.
Continuamos cocinando la paella. We continue cooking the paella.
Vienen corriendo en la casa. They come running into the house.
The Imperfect Progressive
It expresses what was going on at a specific time in the past, often when something else happened.
Imperfect Progressive Tense =Estar + Present Participle
Estaba – I was Estabas – You were Estaba – He was
She was
You were
Estábamos – We were Estabais - You were Estaban - They/You
were
Present Participle – alquilar – alquilando (renting)(-ing) leer - leyendo (reading)
decir – diciendo (saying)

Comer (tú) Estabas comiendo You were eating
Salir (Uds) Estaban saliendo You were leaving
Estudiar (vosotros) Estabais estudiando You were studying
Bailar (Juanita) Estaba bailando Juanita was dancing
Hacer (Los muchachos) Estaban haciendo The boys were doing
Cantar (el profesor) Estaba cantando The teacher was singing
Vivir (Uds.) Estaban viviendo You were living
Irregulars
dormir (yo) estaba durmiendo I was sleeping
poder (nosotros) estábamos pudiendo we were being able (not used)
preferir (ellas) estaban prefiriendo they were prefering
sentir (tú) estabas sintiendo you were feeling/regretting
venir (Ud.) estaba viniendo you were coming
leer (Uds.) estaban leyendo you were reading
(la clase) oír estaba oyendo the class was hearing
ir (Enrique) Estaba yendo Enrique was going
Again, instead of the helping verb estar, you may also use seguir, continuar, or venir.
Seguía estudiando para el examen. I continued studying for the test.
Continuábamos cocinando la paella. We continued cooking the paella.
Venían corriendo en la casa. They came running into the house.
Part II – Using the progressive tenses with direct object pronouns
These direct object pronouns may be attached on to the present participle:
me - me te - you lo – it, him, you la – it, her, you
nos – us os – you los, las – them,
you
I was renting it. Estaba alquilándolo. or Lo estaba alquilando.
He was reading them. Él estaba leyéndolos.
They were writing it. Estaban escribiéndolo.
You were helping me. Estabas ayudándome.
She was watching it. Estaba mirándolo.
You were watching us. Estabas mirándonos.
Juan was buying it. Juan estaba comprándola.
You all were seeing it. Estaban/Estabais viéndolo.
Part III – Using the progressive tenses with indirect object pronouns
These indirect object pronouns may be attached on to the present participle:
me – to me te – to you le – to him, her,
you
nos – to us os – to you les – to them, you
You were writing to us. Estabas escribiéndonos.
Juan was buying the tie for me.. Juan estaba comprándome la corbata.
You all were preparing the food for him. Estaban/Estabais preparándole la
comida.
They were giving the book to them. Estaban dándoles el libro.
You were talking to me. Estabas hablándome.
She was reading the story to us. Estaba leyéndonos el cuento.
…indirect before direct
Pedro estaba cantándomela. Pedro was singing it to me.
Uds. Estaban escribiéndonoslos. You were writing them to us.
Yo estaba enviándoselas (a el). le
I was sending them to him.
Part IV – Using the progressive tenses with reflexive pronouns
These reflexive pronouns may be attached on to the present participle:
me – myself te – yourself se – himself,
herself, yourself
nos – ourselves os – yourselves se – themselves,
yourselves
They were washing themselves. Estaban lavándose.
You were getting dressed. Estabas vistiéndote.
She was combing her hair. Estaba peinándose el pelo.
I was falling asleep. Estaba durmiéndome.
We were putting on our shoes. Estábamos poniéndonos los zapatos.
She was putting on her make-up. Estaba maquillándose.
