Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will:

Understand the functionality of Camtasia Have an awareness of the key concepts Recognise the tools and how they are used Be able to produce ‘learning’ resources utilising

the various tools and features Transfer what you have learnt to what you want

to do

What is Camtasia?

Details of the company (Techsmith) Trial version available Educational license (approx cost £180 for 6

licenses)

ADDIE model

The ADDIE model is a systematic instructional design model consisting of five phases:

Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation

5

ADDIE

Analysis During analysis, the designer identifies the

learning problem, the goals and objectives, the audience’s needs, existing knowledge, and any other relevant characteristics.  Analysis also considers the learning environment, any constraints, the delivery options, and the timeline for the project.

6

ADDIE

Design A systematic process of specifying learning

objectives.  Detailed storyboards and prototypes are often made, and the look and feel, graphic design, user-interface and content is determined here.

7

ADDIE

Development The actual creation (production) of the

content and learning materials based on the Design phase.

8

ADDIE

Implementation During implementation, the plan is put into

action and a procedure for training the learner and teacher is developed.  Materials are delivered or distributed to the student group. After delivery, the effectiveness of the training materials is evaluated.

9

ADDIE

Evaluation This phase consists of (1) formative and (2)

summative evaluation. Formative evaluation is present in each stage of the ADDIE process. Summative evaluation consists of tests designed for criterion-related referenced items and providing opportunities for feedback from the users.  Revisions are made as necessary.

Camtasia Studio Interface

Exercise – Getting Started

Creating a new project & importing media

– Create a New Project– Import media in to the Clip Bin from C:\sample

Three images Two videos One audio

– Add above media to the timeline

14

Recording

Two flavours– Record the screen

Select which areas you wish to capture System sounds

– Record the powerpoint Narration Automatic captions via notes Camtasia also embeds in to PowerPoint

15

Exercise 2 – Recording

Record the example PowerPoint provided– Aim for about three minutes

Create a screen capture– Aim for about five minutes in length– Select an application that has ‘complex’

functionality e.g. UEL Plus, EndNote

16

Editing

Decouple tracks Use split to cut out sections of the timeline Top and tail timeline

– Using the inpoint (green) and outpoint (red)

17

Exercise - Editing

Perform some basic edits on the timeline

– Split a track in two points and remove the section– Extend an image so that is has a longer duration

18

Adding title clips

Purpose:– Break up long videos in to shorter sections– Pass on additional information– Placeholder for call outs

Images could be used in the same way, and

are perhaps a better option

19

Exercise - Adding title clips

Splitting a video clip and adding title clips

– Split the video clip at a logical point Position the playhead in the appropriate place Right click on the vid timeline > Split

– Add a title clip Title Clips > Add title clip Adjust colour, add text and add a background image

– Repeat the above steps at another point in the timeline or for a different video

20

Markers and captions

21

Quiz

22

Callouts

Callouts can be inserted at any point in the video timeline

Shapes– Shapes with text

Sketch motion Special

– Highlighter– Spotlight– etc

Can also ‘hotspot’ for linking external resources

23

Exercise - Callouts

Create number of callouts at any point in the

video track

– Add a shape callout that does not fade out– Add a shape with text callout that fades out after

10 seconds– Add a special highlighter callout– Add two other callouts of your own choice

24

Picture in Picture

25

UELconnect Examples

Camtasia– ICT Skills2 (disseminating information)– Module resources (engaging students)

Viewlet Builder– UEL Plus– Library Resources

Articulate (full blown authoring tool)– E-learning courses for the ASA

26

Practical Tips

Save regularly– Use versioning for major changes/edits

If you make a mistake when recording:– Edit it out later rather than starting again– Pause and leave a couple of seconds ‘dead’ time to

identify what needs to be removed

Where will your final product be hosted?– UEL Plus– Externally facing websites (e.g. library pages)*****

27

Producing the resource

Camtasia project files are not portable Range of production options based on need:

– Web– Blog– Ipod/mobile devices (flash output could be

problematic)– HD & DVD

Player skins

28

Exercise - Production

Export your Camtasia out in to a usable form

– Start with ‘Produce and Share’– Think about the options available and choose the

one you believe would be the most ‘usable’– Once that is complete launch the application– IF you have time try and produce using the

‘custom settings’

29

Practical Tips

Speak at an appropriate pace Exaggerate your mouse movements Good quality microphone
