In 1918 a deadly flu epidemic spread throughout the world.

More soldiers died from the influenza epidemic than in the trenches. Soldiers brought it home

Utah state health officer banned all public gatherings including church services.

Schools closed for 2-3 months

Street cars limited the number of riders

Business hours were shortened and no special sales could be held (No black Friday!!!)

Funerals were limited to 30 min and then down to 15 min.

Reformers who wanted better living conditions and better life for all Americans.

They wanted the government to help: › clean up the cities (sewers, gutters, paved streets)

› regulate air pollution

› Railroad charging high prices

› Safe food was a concern… there were no regulations.

They worked for laws preventing child labor,

and minimum wages for females.

Prohibition was the biggest outcome!

Progressive were against alcohol and

thought it was evil.

They tried to outlaw alcohol. They passed

Prohibition or the outlawing of consuming,

selling, or making alcohol nationally.

Prohibition was ratified in the 18th

Amendment to the Constitution.

Farming

Mining

Smelters produced a smoke belt that polluted the

air, damaged crops and hurt animals. Farmers took

them to court and one-Murray smelter closed.

Labor movement- union to get better wages and

safer working conditions

I.W.W. (industrial workers of the World)… very

violent groups.

Joe Hill (Swedish immigrant) helped fight . Arrested

for murder… thousands tried to prevent his death…

he was executed by firing squad.

Mining labor unions formed to get higher

wages

Strike!

› Bingham canyon miners took guns to the

side of the mountain and dug trenches, so they could fire down on guards or

strikebreakers

› Father Lambrides convinced strikers to resolve with the Governor- miner shot and a

strikebreaker was killed

The miners wanted:

› Better Wages

› 8-10 hour work day

› Workers Compensation

Remember why Utah’s women first had

the right to vote???

In 1920 Women received the right to

vote with the passing of the 19th

amendment to the United States
