Property Description
Plumfield Academy is located on eight acres of well-landscaped land in rural Sonoma County. Four wooden yurts comprise the school. All buildings have large windows allowing students opportunity to observe wildlife. The classrooms are organized by subject area and the students rotate to different rooms throughout the day. Laptop computers are available in all classrooms. School walls display student-work written about wildlife and student-made masks. Annual school pictures of students and staff wearing hand-made themed costumes while participating in local parades and musical shows are also displayed. The grounds include wooden walking paths, a bridge, boardwalks and a greenhouse all built by previous NPS students. There is a fruitful vegetable garden tended by students. Large open fields and biking and jogging paths allow the all-male student population room for exercise.

Commendations
Plumfield Academy is commended for the following: A school atmosphere that is calm and supportive. A sense of community and good citizenship skills are developed and demonstrated by students through a variety of activities. Student artistic expressions, physical fitness and problem solving are emphasized. A unique focus on student self-evaluation. Students determine whether their “points” were earned at the end of each class. Consequences are immediate. They miss recess or work-out time and instead write reflections on their behavior and how time may be better spent. Lunch hour is a supervised time to work on sportsmanship and social skills training. Students who have earned level three status can eat with their peers outside, in the patio area. Students are also given the opportunity to engage in team sports where socialization skills are taught and encouraged. Students are given the opportunity for musical expression (drumming) and several theatrical and parade opportunites annually at local community and district-wide events. Trophies and awards for these activities are displayed in the music room. A school-wide focus towards real world application of classroom learning, post-secondary goals and students' future which can be seen in posted photographs of graduates in their current careers - US Navy sailors in uniforms, for example. Record keeping is comprehensive, organized and tabed in binders with detailed progress reports and present levels of performance clearly stated in IEPs and triennial assessments.
