    OCT 27, 10:30 AMINFUSING WOMEN INTO THE HISTORY OF JAPANESE TEA CULTUREAlthough women make up around 90 percent of tea ceremony practitioners in contemporary Japan, histories of the practice typically ignore women’s presence until the late nineteenth century. In her book, Cultivating Femininity: Women and Tea Culture in Edo and Meiji Japan, Dr. Rebecca Corbett writes women back into the history of chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) in the Edo (1603–1868) and Meiji (1868–1912) periods.ViewPoints are made possible in part through the generosity of the Lester E. Bessemer and Mary Tilley Bessemer Endowment and the Siemer Family Ringling Museum Education Endowment.

    OCT 13, 9:00 AMART EDITSSeveral artworks in our collection have changed over time. Some have changed shape, some have changed size, and some have changed in even more drastic ways! This teacher workshop will focus on artworks that have been altered over the years. Teachers will learn why artworks are altered and the danger such change invites. A new Teacher Resource Guide will debut during this workshop where teachers learn to lead students in grades 3–5 on curriculum-based tours examining how change might be beneficial, benign, or disastrous.

    The Museum of Art and Circus Museum will be free of charge on September 22, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s annual Museum Day.

    STORYTELLINGThis month we will focus on how to “read” a story from a work of art! We will be exploring both images in The Ringling’s permanent collections as well as prints and paintings in the special exhibition Storytelling: French Art from the Horvitz Collection. Each ticket will admit one child and up to two adults. All participants must check-in at the Children’s Welcome center, where tickets will be redeemed for wristbands and a map explaining the day’s activities. Includes access the featured venue for the remainder of the day.

    STROLLER TOURSTUESDAYS • 10:00 AM$5 / Free for Members. Ticket required.Parents or caregivers visiting the museum with an infant will enjoy this one-hour tour that allows for adult discussion within a group that does not mind if a chatty or crying baby joins the conversation.
