Caesar’s English Lesson VII

AMAT means love. An amorous feeling is full of love; an

amateur is not a professional, but just someone who loves to do something; and amity is the

loving friendship in a town!

LUNA means moon. A lunar landing is on the moon; a lunatic was once thought to be driven mad by the

moon; and sublunar refers to things happening under the full moon!

GREG means group. To congregate is to group together; to segregate is to

put a group apart; and gregarious means to stay in groups, as cattle do

in a field.

CLAMCLAM means cry outcry out. A clamor is a great outcry; an exclamation is a loud cry from someone; and to declaim is

to make a speech noisily!

TANG means touch. A tangle is a mess in which everything is touching everything in a knot; a tangent is a

line that touches a circle; and intangible job benefits are those you

can not touch, such as being interested in your work!

Advanced Word: Gregarious

The adjective gregarious (greh-GAIR-ee-us) contains the stems greg (group) and ous (full of). Gregarious means sociable, and some species are more gregarious than others. Cattle are gregarious; we often see them in one corner of a field, or under one tree, together. Human beings are gregarious; we love to be together, and most of the time we don’t like to be alone. In speaking of the Fin-back whale in Moby Dick, Herman Melville wrote that “The Fin-back is not gregarious. He seems a whale-hater, as some men are man-haters.”
