Who is Melvil Dewey? He invented the Dewey Classification
System for books in 1876.
He was born in northern New York
and as a child he loved math class and
organizing things.
Using his love for organization and mathematics, he
formed the Dewey Decimal Classification System while
working as a student in the Amherst College library.

How it all works The Dewey Decimal Classification system is the way
the libraries organize nonfiction books in a uniform way.
The Dewey system assigns a number to a given book based on its subject matter.
This system is broken down into ten main classes. The classes are defined by discipline.
