Peace, Perfect Peace?
Last Saturday I stood in front of 30 young men who I had never met. Looking out at them I could not help but think of the profoundness of the situation. All of these men were from Iran. All were from a country we have so often put on our list of “enemies.” And yet these men looked back at me not with eyes of distain or hatred, but with eyes of love and friendship. They showed hearts open to learning more about this Jesus they had
only heard referred to in the Muslim religion.
Their questions were amazing. I had expected questions, but some of them tugged especially hard on my heart. As we talked about what a man of God looks like, the term “peacemaker” came up. Soon the questions followed, “what about peace? Is peace really possible?” I had to imagine for a moment the context from which those questions came. They had been part of a regime dominated by religious extremists bent on doing away with anyone who thinks differently than they do. The answers were not easy for them. True peace is more than the “cessation of hostilities” between two peoples. It has to begin much deeper. It has to begin with peace between the sinner and his Creator.
Sin causes hostility. Sin separates. Sin alienates.
That is of course the beauty of the gospel of Jesus. This God-man came to make peace where peace was not possible. It is Jesus who breaks down the walls of hostility and opens the door to fellowship with the God of love. The beauty of that picture, the beauty of that possibility is what attracts men and
women around the world to the good news. Are we peacemakers?
“He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.” (Eph. 2:17)

Good Morning, Baker Heights!
Isn’t it wonderful to be a Christian? Isn’t it wonderful to know we serve a risen Savior? That God loved us enough he put a plan into motion so we could be with Him in Heaven – despite
our shortcomings and our sinful natures (John 3:16).
I feel very blessed to know such a God and to have someone willing to accept my sins as His own – even though He is innocent and blameless. I feel blessed as well to be worshipping here at Baker Heights. To be worshipping with a group of believers who are all trying to worship as God intends – to be
worshipping with a family.
After we married and moved to east Texas, my wife said many times that she couldn’t understand how people make it without a church family. Thank you
for all the blessings you bring to this congregation.
Praise be to God for His grace that reaches even
me.
In Him,
Stuart W. Tiner
