Our thanks to God Almighty goes without saying, for the successful completion of the CiBEC Cohort V, here at the MMC Northern Region. Our heartfelt gratitude is extended to the sponsors and orga-nizers, TM and BATC respectively for initiating the idea of having such a course. This includes En. Mohd. Zainal Badri Mustafar, advisor to the publication board, Encik Hamudi bin Mat Hassan, Secretariat of CiBEC – Cohort V, and all staff of the MMC Northern Region.
A special note of thanks to Mr. G.S. Arumugam, the Pro-gramme Director of CiBEC, and also Programme Manager for Cohort V, to the ever smiling En. Abdul Hamid Hashim and jovial En. Salihin Mohamed Yusoff, who made the four weeks all the more enjoyable and memorable, as well as to all the staff of BATC who gave their unreserved support that helped in the success of this course.
Not forgetting the group of energetic facilitators who relent-lessly gave their fullest in guiding participants to a new level of under-standing of the working world and what’s in store for us out there. Also, thank you to all committee members and all hands that helped with the production of this Bulletin specially Mr. Sivakumar Nambiar and Ms. Nomita Paul
I am very happy to write in this special Souvenir Book that marks the conclusion of your participation in the CiBEC Programme. During this one-month period, you have been exposed, trained and guided in a skill that will serve you well throughout your life.
More and more, English is becoming a near-universal basic skill. What this means for graduates like you is that without a certain proficiency in the language, you will not be as marketable and as attractive to prospective employers. At the end of the day, this will hamper your chance of getting a job or furthering your career. And with this in mind, TM takes the initiative to offer this programme for graduates.
Since 2006, five CiBEC sessions have been organised. Altogether, 852 graduates have been trained. I am indeed delighted to note the graduates in the CiBEC programme not only learn and improve their
proficiency level of English but other workplace related skills are also imparted. These skills are important pre-requisites for gaining employment. This is also our way of supporting the Government’s agenda to tackle the problem of rising unemployment among graduates in the country. The implementation of the CiBEC program is also in line with the 9th Malaysia Plan where its main focus is on human capital development.
In closing, I would like to record our appreciation to the CiBEC teachers, BATC and those who have put in their untiring efforts to make the CiBEC programme a success. To the CiBEC graduates, congratulations for completing the programme. I encourage you to use what you have learnt here to further enhance your employability standing.

Dear CiBEC Participants
I am happy to take this opportunity to share a few words with you. Congratulations for successfully completing the Certificate in Business English and Communication Skills (CiBEC) programme and also producing this Bulletin. This Bulletin is a testimony to the learning process that you have undergone in the programme.
The CiBEC programme was specially conceptualised and designed by TM to prepare participants to be ready for employment. In fact, participants who have undergone this programme have an advantage over those who have not attended such a programme. The variety of content from pure English learning to IT awareness, grooming, public speaking, drama and poetry sessions are meant not only to improve your proficiency level in English but also to develop social and business skills relevant for employment.
I am confident that graduates of this programme will soon find gainful employment.

I am indeed delighted to note that you have shown full commitment and hard work to produce the CiBEC Bulletin. It will become an important record of happenings and activities that took place during the programme. Well done to those who have contributed towards the production of the CiBEC Bulletin. We now have CiBEC Bulletins produced by graduates in Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur and Perak. I hope this initiative will be continued by other groups in the future.
The Certificate in Business English and Communications Skills (CiBEC) programme offered by TM is quite different from many other English programmes. Here, the English language learning is combined with management skills. This fusion is of paramount importance, because employers are not only keen on those graduates who are proficient
in English, but have some management skills and knowledge as well. With the employment market becoming increasingly competitive, the CiBEC will definitely be an advantage.
Finally, I really hope that in the future, you will successfully enter the job market and apply the skills you have acquired.

To My Beloved Friends,
First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude and extend my congratulations to TM and BATC-UTM on the success of this CiBEC Cohort V here at the Multimedia College Northern Region, Taiping.
To all participants who have now become friends and comrades, warmest congratulations to you for completing this programme. Thank you for being my pillars of support, especially the committee members. Being a leader is not an easy task, without the support and cooperation of the entire team, the leader is nothing. Once again, I wish to thank those who have supported me throughout this programme.
Bonds have been built, laughter has been shared, comradeship gained and trust earned. Apart from the knowledge gained, friendship and respect were formed in this one month. Leaving here will be hard,
but memories of the experience here will always remain.

Communication Skills Programme
CiBEC Course Content
The Certificate in Business English Communication Skills Programme (CiBEC) is a one month intensive fully residential programme meant for graduates in various disciplines who are un-employed as well as for those already in employment seeking better prospects.
With a team of qualified and experienced facilitators, the programme promises an effective, interactive, dynamic and fun learning experience.
To date, four cohorts have been successfully completed. It has been proven that the level of proficiency English among the par-ticipants increased significantly upon completion of the programme. Numerous participants have been successfully employed by major multinational companies such as Nestle, Mercedes Benz and TM.
CiBEC serves as a gateway for graduates to venture into the working world by equipping them with the necessary knowledge in Eng-lish, Communication, Business and Social Skills.
This programme is sponsored by TM in collaboration with the Business and Advance Technology Centre (BATC) and University Technology Malaysia(UTM).

CiBEC Organisational Structure of BATC
The Business and Advanced Technology Cen-tre (BATC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was estab-lished in 1992 as a government initiative under the direc-tion of the former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.
It is the result of visits made by Tun Dr. Mahathir to University of Warwick, which is based in Conventry, United Kingdom that led to the collaboration between BATC and Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG).
WMG is part of University of Warwick’s school of Engineering. BATC was the third centre to be set up in collaboration with WMG. Other centres are located in India, Thailand, South Africa, USA and Hong Kong.
BATC is envisioned as a learning ground to provide top class knowledge and experience base to Malaysian industry to com-pete successfully in a rapidly changing regional and global market.
To date, more than 100 working professionals from cor-porate sector as well as the government have benefited through BATC’s post graduated degree and executive development programs.

Registration of CiBEC participants was held on Sunday, 17th of June 2007. 254 participants from different walks of life from all over Malaysia registered for the CiBEC program. The registration process was held in front of Dewan Kejora, Multimedia College Northern from 9 am to 2 pm. Room keys and CiBEC shirts were given out to all reg-istered participants. Parents and participants were served with food and drinks.
Registration DayA Win, Lose or Draw contest was held on
the 21st of June 2007 divided into 6 groups.
The game started at 8.40 pm in Kejora Hall.
The MC was Encik Abdul Jalil. There were 4
categories which included simple words, fairy
tales, movies and proverbs for the contestant
to guess. The results of the contest were as
follows:

2. Group D
3. Group B
The activity was really exciting and there
was team spirit among all the participants.

The activity was held on the 23rd of June 2007, in the theatre at 8.30 am. All CiBEC participants took part in the poetry competition. There were 41 groups from 6 classes (Group A to Group F). Some interesting acts included throwing money and scattering plastic flowers. The judges were Madam Saroj Menon, Mr. Bruce MacKinnon and Mr. J.S Solomon. The MC was Mr. Shubojit Choudry. The results of the competition are listed:
1. Group E3 (Money Madness) 2. Group C2 (“Take Time” Old English Prayer) 3. Group A6 (The Snare)
The activity ran smoothly and successfully. All participants gave their full commitment and cheered for their team mates. The audience was also very attentive.
Poetry Recitation
The activity was held on the 23rd of June 2007. All participants took part in the Night Walk and Treasure Hunt at Taiping Lake Gardens. The competition started at 8 pm and it was organized by TM.
The walk started from Multimedia College to Lake Gardens. On reaching there, they were given a task to find eleven answers to eleven questions given. In order to find the answers, participants needed to find certain places
being shown on the map. The results of the game were as follows:

Although most of the participants were tired, the activity helped foster team spirit and cooperation.
Night Walk & Treasure Hunt

The Bukit Larut climb was held on the 24th June
2007, at 7 am. All participants gathered at MMC field for
a briefing. Then, the participants walked towards Bukit
Larut, also known as Maxwell Hill, in groups of 6. Before
that, they were provided with mineral water and buns.
Each of the group was also needed to carry 3 eggs with
them to the Bukit Larut peak safely.
All participants reached the foot of Bukit Larut by 8 am.
After half an hour, every participant started to climb
Bukit Larut through the jungle path. There were lots
of obstacles ahead including walking through rapids,
crossing two bridges and walking through a twisted
jungle path.
Participants managed to reach the peak through sheer
determination. The results of the hike were:

summed it up all. This hike really tested the participant’s
physical, mental and teamwork abilities.

The Sport Tournament was held for two weeks. The
event was organized by the Sport and Recreation
Bureau. There were 3 games;
volleyball, football and netball. Volleyball and
football were played by female
participants while the netball was played by the
male participants. All the teams displayed high
sportsmanship spirit. Throughout the competition,
we learned to be good team players, good
strategists and strengthened our relationships.

A talk entitled “Knowing TM, Loving TM” was delivered on 28 June 2007 by Mr. Abd. Hamid Hashim and Mr. Salihin Mohamed Yusoff from TM. The talk was held from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm at Dewan Kejora. Basically, the talk was about TM and Kristal. The talk was later continued by a speech from Mr. Ismail Nordin held on 29 June 2007 from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. From the talk and the speech, we were able to learn many things about TM, its policies, its customer relationship services, its obligation to the society and how they fulfill them.

The competition was held on 30th June 2007 at Dewan Kejora. It was participated by 36 speakers with every group sending 6 speak-ers. The chief judge was Mr. Sivakumar and the co-judges were Mr. Sabbir Ali Hussin and Mr. Abdul Jalil. The winners were:

A debate was held between team ABC and team DEF on the 7th of July 2007 successfully. The subject of the debate was “Is Climate Change a Real Problem?” and the chairman was Bhama a/p Chandra Ghandi. Team ABC was picked as the proposition team while team DEF as the opposition team. Below are the list of the proponents and the opponents:

The proposition team won the debate. All the partici-pants were fully aware of the damage caused by the climate change due to a movie-screening by the Secre-tariat titled “An Inconvenient Truth”.
Talk: “Can Youth Help in Shaping Future Generation?”
A talk entitled “Can Youth Help in Shaping Future Generation?” was held on the 6th of July 2007 at De-wan Kejora. The talk was delivered by Prof. Madya Dr. Mastura Bt Badzis, a lecturer on Child Psychology from Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The talk was focused on how the youth can help to overcome the increasing number of problematic children. The talk also taught us good parenting skills is one of the prominent elements which every parent must learn in order to produce a better generation and good leaders in the future.
Drama CompetitionA drama competition was held with an objective to create a cordial environment for all participants to learn English. The competition was divided in 2 sessions. The first session was held on 9th July 2007 while the second session was held on 10th July 2007. The first session consisted of participants from groups D, E and F while the second session made up of participants from groups A, B and C. Each of the 6 groups put up 4 skits. The participants were all very enthusiastic and prepared all the props themselves. They were quite happy to clown around and played their part extremely well. All of us had had a great time.
Mock InterviewsInterviews are essential to get a job. One compo-nent of the CiBEC program is the mock interview sessions. There were 2 facilitators acting as the interviewers to interview each participant. As a preparation, all the participants were required to submit their resume/curriculum vitae, job adver-tisements and cover letters. Attending mock interviews was an interest-ing experience as it gave the participants an idea on what to expect during the real job interviews.
Graduation DayThe Graduation Day was held on 14 July 2007 at Dewan Kejora. Dato’ Abdul Wahid Omar, the Chief Executive Officer of TM graciously presided over the function, giving out scrolls to the participants. All the participants were very happy on the gradu-ation day after completing a one month program. Attractive presents were given to the winners of the various events and competitions held and to the top performers in the course.
