dear Friends,
I reach out to you today, after one of the most difficult years
of our community’s history, not with a message of fear and
uncertainty, but a message of hope and certainty of a better
tomorrow. 2016 brought distrust, anger, and problems we
will face for generations to come. But this year also showed
me the depths of human compassion and fortitude when we
work together. I saw kids learning about nutrition and filling
their bodies with healthy foods to help them grow. I watched
an excited youth overcome fear and go down a zip-line for the
first time. I spotted a senior come alive and regain strength and
mobility with their personal trainer. Across our community, I
saw people fighting – fighting to improve their health, fighting
for our youth, fighting for human dignity, fighting for a better
tomorrow. As the cold winds of winter blow in a new year, I
pledge to you that we will continue that fight, to stand with our
community and create a healthier future.

TeACHIng SKIllS THAT sAVe liVesThere is a list of basic life skills all parents instinctively know
they must teach their children to keep them safe and healthy.
It includes habits like looking both ways before you cross the
street, washing your hands with soap and water, and eating the right
amount of fruits and vegetables every day.
For too many parents, safety in and around water is not on the list;
and that’s something we need to change. The Y is committed to
reducing water-related injuries, particularly in communities where
children are most at risk.
The 4th grade Swim Safety Program exists through the collaboration
of the Flint Community Schools and the YMCA of greater Flint, with
grants from the Ruth Mott Foundation, Michigan Health endowment
Fund and YMCA of the uSA. Students participate in seven swim
lessons where they learn swimming and safety techniques when
in an aquatic setting. The program has reached more than 3,000
students in the six years since it began.
Sed quas iur alit hici mi, secm re es.Robyn’s Y journey started with an extra credit assignment from her college professor – do something every day for 30 days straight that would have a positive impact on your life. Robyn decided this would be a perfect time to utilize
her free trial card she received for completing physical therapy at Hurley SportsCare. Her journey took her from Aqua Zumba to having enough strength to complete a cardio kickboxing class and beyond. Her group fitness instructor Marie Jones-Watts shared that Robyn is a true inspiration to her even though she’s the teacher! Robyn doesn’t let anything get in the way of making it to class and is a true example to us all.

And when others in the nation asked, “How could this happen?” YMCAs
across the state and nation asked, “How can we help?” YMCAs stepped
up to provide and continue to provide our members with clean water
to cook, drink, and bathe in. To date, more than 10,000 cases of water have
been distributed through the Y. Because of the generosity of many Y’s, we
were able to install specialized drinking fountains for our members and youth
at our downtown Branch and Safe Places sites. We are forever grateful to our
sister YMCA branches around the state and nation who came together and
supported us in our time of need.
When news broke of the Flint water crisis, the nation turned its gaze to Flint.

This work has taken an even greater importance
with the lead crisis. last year, our Safe Places
Afterschool program served thousands of snacks
and meals to youth in Flint. our children know that they can
come to the Y to have fun, learn something new and, yes,
eat healthy food!
We have been honored to be part of a new food initiative in
Flint, that is working to improve access to healthy food for
those greatest in need. Starting August 2015, the Y, with
partners Flint Food Works, The local grocer, neighborhood
engagement Hub and Community Foundation of greater
Flint, formed Flint Fresh Mobile Market, a mobile farmer’s
market that brings much needed fresh produce and healthy
staples to neighborhoods and community centers where
there is limited access to grocery stores. We are proud to
be a part of feeding our community.
For over 100 years, the YMCA of greater Flint has fed youth
in the greater Flint Community healthy and nutritious food
that has nourished their bodies and grown their potential.

When youth, teens and young adults in crisis need somewhere to stay,
someone to trust or someone to listen, YMCA Safe Place Services is here
to help – every day. With a focus on positive youth development, our
cause is to strengthen families by breaking cycles of violence, abuse and turmoil,
giving children and families the resources they need for a better future.

MAKIng An i.M.P.A.C.t.Kristiya Smith is an 11-year-old student at McMonagle
elementary. She attends the Safe Places program regularly
at Berston Fieldhouse. At Safe Places, Kristiya participates
in science, technology, engineering, and math (S.T.e.M.) activities,
field trips, swimming at the Y, and homework help. In 2016,
Kristiya was one of 120 students who participated in Camp
I.M.P.AC.T. – a week-long overnight camp for Flint youth touched
by the water crisis. Kristiya also takes advantage of other
offerings at Berston such as boxing and the Berston Bicycle Club.
Safe Places Berston Fieldhouse site coordinator Valerie Horton says,
“Kristiya is excited about learning and being engaged in new things at
Berston, it is like a second home for her.”

Copneconic is about more than
just fun-filled days in the
sun. Kids learn the values of
honesty, caring, respect, and
responsibility. This summer,
we were able to visibly
see the impact that day
camp has on the campers
through a new program
called “Ties.” A “tie” is
simply a ribbon upon which
each camper who came to
day camp wrote or drew
their favorite memory from
their week at camp. And do you
know what we saw? not pictures
of mountain bikes, zip-lines, or the
beach, but instead pictures of a new friend,
a favorite counselor, or a sentence about feeling safe and welcome at
camp. These ties became more than just a decoration under the pavilion.
They served as a reminder that the impact of camp extends beyond
trying new activities and enjoying the outdoors; it reminded us that
camp always has been, and always will be about people.

Reality edwards has been a part of the
Copneconic family for many years.
She started her camp journey as a
camper, and through the years grew into an
invaluable staff member in our association.
Reality relates her success to her
experience at camp.
“overnight camp was one of the puzzle
pieces I needed to be successful. I
truly believed god placed me in the
hands of individuals who cared for me, in
an environment where I was taught to love
myself, and surrounded by people I could love on. I
experienced the magic of camp at 8 years old as a camper.
Camp had always been home, so I came back as an overnight staff member. I
love the YMCA and I am thankful for the opportunity I was given to not only
gain experience and memories, but also a family,” said edwards.
overnight camp is more than just a week away from home. It’s an opportunity
to gain a sense of independence, meet people who become lifelong friends, and
discover your true self. And for a lucky few, like Reality, a chance to give back
what was once given to you.

Most people would be curious as to
what a yurt is. A yurt is defined as
a circular domed tent stretched over
a collapsible lattice framework, with radial
rafters leading up to a central compression ring.
Historically, this architectural wonder was the
nomadic home of Mongolia and surrounding
regions and has been widely used for thousands
of years.
Inspired by the mission of Children’s
International Summer Village, one of our
Partner Camps, six yurts were built, nestled
gently behind Circle C lodge, and each named
after one of the six populated continents.
Adopting this type of structure provides a
more rustic experience, and a sense of fun and
community. The Yurt Village and its inventive
design will continue to serve children and
groups of all varieties in exciting and safe
ways as Copneconic looks to the future!

30 YeAR PARTneRSHIP enriCHes liVesThis summer was a very special summer for the national Kidney Foundation
and Camp Copneconic as it was the 30th anniversary of their partnership.
The summer of 1986 was the first time the national Kidney Foundation came
to Copneconic and held a camp for kids, ages 8-16, who were living with chronic
kidney disease. Since then, hundreds of kids have had the opportunity to have a
week where, instead of worrying about dialysis or their next visit to the doctor,
all they had to worry about was choosing between going to the zip-line or going
kayaking with their new friends. The national Kidney
Foundation has done tremendous work over the years to
not only make sure that camp is free for every camper,
but to also not let any medical limitations get in the
way of the campers’ experience. Campers are able to
undergo hemodialysis while at camp, not missing a beat.
And sometimes, like this past summer, campers receive
the news that they finally have a donor and are able to
share that tremendous moment with their camp family.
Instead of worrying about dialysis or their next visit to the doctor, all they
had to worry about was choosing between going to the zip-line or
going kayaking with their new friends.

They currently have five swimmers enrolled with the
Falcons, and Joe and Paishanne both work for the
Flint Community School district. They set a great
example of healthy living and family core values. With the
help of the YMCA, the Curtis Family is able to live out their
goals and aspirations in the sport of swimming. emma
Curtis is currently a senior at grand Blanc High School and
will be attending the university of Illinois on a full athletic
scholarship. She was a part of the team that attended the
long Course national Championships and one of five of our
swimmers that qualified for the 18 & under Junior national
Championships, which took place in december at ohio State
university. We are so very proud of emma and her new
adventure of being a student/athlete in the Big 10.

Since 1879, the YMCA of greater Flint has been a pillar of the community with outstanding staff and volunteer leadership, a strong national organization,
and substantial resources. These strengths have resulted in positioning our YMCA to serve and meet community needs for generations to come.
It has been an honor and privilege to serve the YMCA of greater Flint for the past 10+ years in many capacities, including operating board president from 2012–2014 and, beginning in 2017, the president of the YMCA of greater Flint Foundation.
Since its inception in 1996, the YMCA of greater Flint Foundation has provided $10,724,000 dollars of support in programming, projects, and infrastructure. This has helped further the YMCA of greater Flint’s mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs which build healthy spirit, mind, and body.
While this is a remarkable track record, our work is far from finished. The needs of the community have never been greater
and it’s the goal of the YMCA of greater Flint to keep pace with those needs. For the YMCA of greater Flint Foundation to maintain a commensurate level of support, foundation asset growth is essential. The recipe for growth comes from great stewardship, prudent investment management, and gifts, donations and estate bequests from “friends of the Y” like yourself.
While the foundation board is committed to unwavering stewardship and prudent investment management, we hope that you’ll please consider including the YMCA of greater Flint in your charitable contributions, as well as your estate and philanthropic planning.
Sincerely,
JeFF sniDer President, YMCA of greater Flint Foundation
