the mouth of the Swan River, approximately 20km south west of the city of Perth.

Historical FactorsThe historical factors that influenced the
establishment and development of Fremantle were :
1. It was the first settlement of the Swan River colonists in 1829.
2. The city was named after Captain Charles Fremantle, the English naval officer.
3. Settlers were given “land grants” if they chose to settle in Fremantle.
4. Settlers risked losing their land if they didn’t improve their land by clearing it and building a home on it, putting up fences, or by farming it.
5. If land was not improved they could be fined or the land would be taken back.
