COMING EVENTS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Amazingly we have already completed Term 1 for 2021 and what an
action packed term it has been.
Thank you to the following staff who have worked with us during Term
1, replacing staff on leave: Michael Keirs, Andrew Shortell, Heath
Armstrong, Daisha Collins, Chloe Zol and Rick Bayliss. We also wish
Gabe Gheno the very best with his retirement.
Congratulations to Piper House, winning the Athletics Carnival, closely
followed by Fraser, Ridley and Hickey. It was wonderful to see so many
students dress up in House colour costumes. Best costumes for the
day:
Matt Whitfield – Donald Trump
Yasmine Denholm – Wonder Woman
Chloe Sawyers, Paige Dally, Chloe Shearer, Georgia Shingles, Abi Ross -
Grid Girls
Tom Dando – Banana
Kira Roberts and Tash Syngaris – Tradies
Staff – UNO cards
Thank you to NEXUS Health with supporting our students with the
Community Pride awards. Last week a group of students were
recognised for their thoughtful deeds towards other students and/or
staff, throughout Term 1. Congratulations to Rhys Cheadle for taking
out the winning prize for inviting a new student into his friendship group
and making them feel welcome to the College. Rhys won a JB Hi Fi
voucher to the value of $100.
Monday 29th March was parent/teacher/student interviews and it was
wonderful to see so many families back on site and taking an active
and keen interest in their children’s learning. I encourage families to
please keep communication channels open at all times with teachers,
so that students obtain the maximum value from their time at the
College. Our VCAL students worked extremely hard to provide light
snacks and coffees for families.

Tuesday 30th March was the first full school assembly for the year. This was postponed due to
the earlier lockdown in the term. The assembly was run by our school captains Cody Ball and
Angel Ravenhill and students assembled for the first time in Houses. Students were reminded
of the importance of living up to our school values and new school leaders were announced and
recognised. It was a wonderful way to end a busy term.
DET COVID-19 update:
The Victorian Government has further relaxed its COVID Safe settings from 6pm on Friday 26
March 2021.
Changes to the COVID Safe settings include allowing more visitors in the home, changes to
mask wearing in some settings and updates to density limits in some settings. There are limited
operational changes for schools.

Year 7 Splash Excursion
On Wednesday 31st March the year 7s attended Splash in Craigieburn to tie up
our health and safety unit for Term 1. During Term 1 students have learnt about
the importance of safety around water at pools, the beach as well as lakes, rivers
and dams. Classes examined Australian drowning statistics and analysed water
safety articles to apply their understanding of safety around water and how to
minimise the risks involved. Students rotated around through 4 different stations;
water slides, aqua play, inflatable obstacle and water safety at the beach and
river. We were very proud that all students had a go at each of the stations even if
they were a bit nervous at first. All students who attended learnt the skills of how
to perform a rescue, swim through seaweed and safely swim through dangerous
situations.
Thank you to the staff that attended to help.

Geography Excursions In the past month the Year 8 and Year 10 Geography classes have been out on
excursions!
The Year 8A, B and C home groups travelled to Hanging Rock to conduct
fieldwork based around the human and natural characteristics at this famous
landform. Students had to collect a range of data and make observations and
judgements about how this park is managed. According to students, the
highlight of the day was climbing on the rocks and admiring the impressive view!
The Year 10 students have been studying Coastal Management and headed
down to Altona Beach to investigate the level of human impact on this suburban
beach. Students collected a range of data including water samples, field
sketches, vegetation observations as well and photographing different features.
The weather was perfect to spend a day at the beach collecting information,
although none of the students were too impressed with the foul rotten seaweed
smell.
It was fantastic to be
able to get out and
about after not being
able to go on any
excursions last year.

Hello fellow Broadford Secondary College Students!
I just would like to share something with you all that I was happily able to be apart of last
weekend, and that is the Drill Dance Victoria State Championships!
I am apart of a senior team (aged 18+) based in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria called Electrikaires
(club Electrik Drill Dance) and we competed in three different routines over the course of the
Sunday! Those routines were: an Exhibition Drill Routine, Thematic Drill Routine and a Thematic
Dance Routine! Our themes were TRON for Thematic Drill and, funnily, PANDEMIC for Thematic
Dance. These routines called for a lot of concentration and dedication for them to be performed
to the best standard! Many all weekend trainings were all included in the preparation for this
weekend!
Electrikaires had a spectacular finish to the day placing
1st Place: In Exhibition Drill
2nd : In Thematic Drill, and
2nd : In Thematic Dance!
In two weeks time, Electrik Drill Dance will competing in the State National Championships in
Corio! Hopefully, Electrik Drill Dance will be also flying up to the Gold Coast to compete in the
Drill Dance Australia National Championships in a few weeks time, and training hard to hopefully
fly home with something other than our bags!

Electrikaires will be recruiting for the new 2021-2022 season after the 19th April 2021! If you
would like to take on the challenge of being apart of a State Champion Drill Dance team, come
see me in the yard and I’ll give you some information!!

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under 20 years of age who missed any scheduled vaccines, including a catch up program for Meningococcal ACWY vaccine for adolescents aged 15-19 years of age who have not already received the vaccine in school. If students have missed vaccines, either in childhood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immunisation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

This year, Broadford Secondary College is taking part in the Mobile Muster Program. If
you have any old, no longer used mobile devices, chargers or accessories you can
bring them to the school to be put in the Mobile Muster collection bin. These items will
then be recycled, helping to keep eWaste out of landfill while also reusing valuable
resources such as glass, aluminium, lithium, palladium and copper. All you need to do
is make sure the your data has been erased from the phone before bringing it in. If you
need help to do this, more information can be found at the Mobile Muster website
www.mobilemuster.com.au
For any further information, and to drop off old phones, charges and accessories
please see Miss Glover in the Art Staffroom

BROADFORD PROUD
On Tuesday 23rd March a group of our wonderful students attended
Nexus Primary Health for their Community Pride ceremony. Students
have been nominated by BSC staff or members of the community for an
act that helps to build a sense of community in our school. Nominations
were inclusive of students who support other students in class,
supporting teachers to set up classrooms, assist others in times of
need, raise money for charity, including new students into peer groups
and creating a sense of comfort, generally displaying manners etc.
Our mission is to foster the positive behaviours our students are
modelling in our school community.
Nexus Primary Health have been generously supporting this program
over a long period of time, welcoming families into the celebrations and
caring for their community.
Our Wellbeing Team would like to thank all those that nominated
students, the families that attended the ceremony and Nexus Primary
Health.
