Potential Pitfalls Related to SOME Sub-$10,000 HD Acquisition
• Chromatic Aberration
• “Split Screen Effect”–The higher the gain setting, the
more visible it becomes
–Also known as “SSE” on the Camera User Forums
• Excessive noise at all gain settings
• Vertical Smear
BROADCAST & PRODUCTION SYSTEMS DIVISIONBROADCAST & PRODUCTION SYSTEMS DIVISION
Examples of Chromatic Aberration
• “Chromatic aberration" occurs when the lens elements don't perfectly focus the varying wavelengths of light to exactly the same point.
• The result is usually a green or purple fringe around objects, especially on high-contrast transitions (light to dark edges).

Split Screen Effect and Vertical Smear
• Some low-cost HD cameras do not move the full HD image from the imager to the DSP and encoder in one pass. The images are split in half and processed using a proprietary dual readout technology. The problem generally appears only with gain on.
