WHY ATTEND BROADBAND LATIN AMERICA?
Brazil still has a lot to doto increase its fixed
broadband penetrationAri Lopes
Senior Analyst,Ovum
Competition in Brazil’s fixed broadband market is concentrated in a small number of cities: 57% of Braziliancities have just one operator either commanding the majority of connections or as the sole provider in the city.
According to Ari Lopes, Ovum Principal Analyst for Latin America, “There are huge differences in the availability offixed broadband in Brazil. The report identifies 2,800 cities with a population between them of 42 million inhabitants– close to the population of Argentina or Colombia – that have only 500k broadband subscriptions, a penetrationlevel similar to the national average about 10 years ago. Part of the demand is met via mobile broadband, but it is clearthat the country would benefit from a coordinated effort from public and private sectors to expand fixedbroadband infrastructure to the countryside.”
Another challenge is the small footprint of advanced technologies such as FTTx, which is present in just 3% ofBrazilian connections. Despite growing at a fast rate, these technologies are only slowly improving the speed profile ofthe Brazilian market, and only 15% of connections are above 12Mbps.
Ari Lopes has used city-level data in Ovum’s study to provide an in-depth analysis of the different regions of theBrazilian market, giving results that are far more detailed than the country-level statistics. The resulting picture showsthat Brazil still has a lot do to increase its fixed broadband penetration. Lopes concludes by saying: “The size of thechallenge is illustrated by the city-level analysis which has shown that Brazil’s fixed broadband market is even moreconcentrated than the Brazilian GDP – to give some numbers, cities that account for 22% of the population and 8% ofthe GDP have only 2% of the fixed broadband connections.”
