Description:
The new 770 m Baldwin motorway bridge over the Connecticutriver at Saybrook and Old Lyne has been built using a newmethod of post-tensioned pre-cast segmental concrete.
The system used an overhead gantry to transport and positionthe prefabricated segmental concrete sections amongst theheaviest and widest ever used for balanced cantilever con-struction. The 2 hydraulic TIRAK T-3000 hoists were used forhandling the overhead gantry. These large 3 tonne capacityhoists operated in both directions for achieving the necessaryto-and-fro movements to position the segments.
The pulling effort was checked by 2 DYNAFOR load indicatorswith remote display mounted in the crane cabin.
The 2 post-tensioning platforms were lifted and lowered by 2x2TIRAK T-1000 machines reeved on 4 parts of wire rope (photoPA556.2).

Description of application:
The platforms are freely suspended from and are able totraverse along the construction beam. They are used for:
a) Transporting the personnel and materials to the workingposition during the positioning and pre-stressing of theprefabricated bridge sections (weight: 54 tonnes).These are transported and positioned using the guyedconstruction beam; total length 94 m.
b) Positioning the pre-stressing rams (weight: 350 kg)using a chain hoist which traverses along a fixed jib onthe platform.

Description of application:Problem: The work consists in tensioning the prestressing wireropes on the inner part, cutting the extra length of the ropes andinjecting a protective cement to prevent corrosion.Each part is fitted with 3 ribs.Inner part: height 22.30 m, diam. 75.80 m.Outer part: height 14 m, diam. 85.80 m.Solution: The contractor has used the same platforms as forthe Nuclear Plant in Thiange (se M-237). They had beenpreviously mended and modified for this new application.The platforms are suspended to special suspension system.They move in tandem along the ribs.They have three functions:– lifting personnel and material up to the working position;– operating on the left and right of each rib for the placement
of the prestressing ropes and tensioning jacks;– handling the tensioning jacks (weight 750 kg) by means of an

For work on the ledge, the platformshad to be slightly reversed using the trollies on the suspensionstirrups.

The silos are 76 m high.After the tensioning, the extra lengths of the ropes have to becut, and to prevent corrosion, a protective cement is injected.Solution: The use of 4 supporting platforms equipped with 4motorised TIRFORs which move up and down 4 ribs outsidethe silo wall.These platforms have 2 functions:a) lifting personel and material up to the working level where
they can operate simultaneously on the left and on the rightof each rib for the placement of the prestressing ropes andtensioning jacks,
