Breakthrough To Nursing: Escalate

Your Career By Breaking Barriers

By: Jae Kook Lim – BTN Director

BTN Committee: Adam Tebben - Director-North

Sabrina Lozier – Imprint Editor

How it all started

The past…

September 1945 – First, written constitution for the Student Nurses Association

September 1948 – ANA Board of Directors discussed student participation in the ANA Modeled after the Detroit District Student Nurses’

Association (DDNSA)

1952 – formation of National Student Nurses Association

“Not For Ourselves But For Others” - NSNA

One of BTN’s biggest and first project: NSNA dormitory at the National Defense Medical Center, Taipei $34,000 raised to build 50 state constituents participated Project goal: reunite nursing students from United

States and China

Cultural Icebreaker Game

Thank you, Daniel Duron – BTN Director for California, for this awesome game.

Red Rover Alternative by Daniel Duron Break up into groups of 5 people that you do not know. 4 people will interlock their arms while the one person is

outside the circle (think of a football huddle). The 4 people will talk about a topic while the fifth person tries to make their way in. The 4 people will try to keep the person out. When the fifth person makes it in, you can switch who is the “outside” person.

Topics to talk about: Topic 1: Favorite thing of convention so far Topic 2: Where is each person from Topic 3: How are classes going so far Topic 4: What specialty of nursing do you want to go to

and why Topic 5: Any other non nursing classes you are taking Time between topic: 5 minutes

What are some great BTN Projects we can implement?

Persuade, Convince, Showcase! My personal BTN work:

Set up “Senior-Junior Buddy” program at the College of Nursing -> between “First-Year” nursing students with “Second-Year” nursing students.

Collaborated with Association of Pre-Nursing Students (UCF) to set up mentorship program between the “First-Year” nursing students and “Pre-nursing” students.

Assisted local SNA chapters in bringing out nursing leaders -> how does this tie in with BTN?

Participated in STEM DAY to present what is nursing all about -> a day when over 1,000 students come to University of Central Florida to learn about future majors.

Set up a meeting with nursing leaders from the surrounding area for critiques!

BTN Theme 2015-2016: Escalate Your Career By Breaking Barriers

Where to begin…

BTN means different for each one of us. For me, it stands for opportunities and diversities. We have the power to change peoples’ perspective about nursing!! We have the power to reach out to the under-represented communities and give them a voice in the nursing workforce.

Nursing is not restricted to only “bedside” care! Talk about: Critical Care Nurse Clinical Nurse Specialist Dermatology Nurse Camp Nurse

The list goes on and on…

Family Nurse Practitioner Flight/Transport Nurse Forensic Nurse Nurse Attorny Nurse Educator Nurse Entrepreneur Public Health Nurse Veterans Affairs Nurse Travel Nurse Case Management Nurse

What can we do?

Make a video consists of BTN Directors from across the nation to talk about one area of nursing!! Anyone?!

Keep your mind open on the available resources that you can utilize to promote nursing. E.g. Career fairs at schools, nursing leaders, your

own faculty staff! Let’s work together!!

You get a resource, you get a resource, everyone gets a resource!
