Bossy Verbs
Mr. Chatterbox has made all Little Miss Bossy’s
sentences too long! They don’t sound bossy anymore!
Can you help Little Miss Bossy cut out words to turn
them into sentences with bossy verbs? Remember!
Bossy verbs and sentences sound like commands
and instructions. 1. Please could you come over and fold the paper in half?
2. Could you carefully drive to the hotel?
3. Please pour the milk into the bowl.
4. When you are ready, line up at the door.
5. Take your coats off, but please do it carefully.
6. Gently remove the jelly from the mould.
7. If you want to, cut along the dotted line.
8. When you have time, add the icing to the cake.
9. Please close the door after you.
10. I think you should turn right at the traffic lights, don’t you?
Now you have helped make those sentences bossy, can you come up
with your own bank of bossy verbs? Little Miss Bossy could do with 20!
Now that you have a word bank, can you write a mini bossy poem like
the one we read? Little Miss Bossy needs some instructions for one of
the following:
1. How to get ready in the morning. 2. How to get to school. 3. How to get a house point.

Irregular Past Tense Verbs
To show that something happened in the past the verb changes in a

BUT some verbs are irregular; we don’t add ‘ed’ and the spelling changes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Use the irregular past tense verbs in the word box to change the verb in the sentences below. Prefixes and suffixes
In Year 3 children‟s knowledge of suffixes and prefixes
increases and they need to know that sometimes the spelling
of the stem alters when adding some suffixes. They also learn
that sometimes adding a prefix or suffix will mean that there
are two of the same letter consecutively in a word e.g.
unnecessary, keenness.
Put in the correct prefix to change the word to the opposite
meaning.

What did Romans do in their spare time?
Most people in Roman times did not have much spare time, they were too
busy working. They liked board games. We know this because archaeologists
have found counters and dice in the ground.
The Romans enjoyed watching fights between gladiators, and fights between
people and animals. These bloodthirsty shows were put on in front of crowds
in large arenas called amphitheatres. Gladiators fought one another, usually in
pairs. They also fought wild animals such as lions or bears. When a gladiator
was beaten (but still alive), the audience would wave scarves or put their
thumbs out if they wanted him killed. If he'd fought well, and they wanted him
to live, they would close their thumbs onto their fingers. Different types of
gladiators used different weapons. For example, a man with a sword and shield
might fight a man with a three-pronged spear or trident, and a big net.
Romans enjoyed the theatre. Most plays were funny comedies, though there
were serious tragedies as well. Actors often wore masks to show whether their
character was happy or sad! They also wore wigs - an old man had a white wig,
a slave had a red wig. Roman emperors put on free shows at theatres and
amphitheatres as it was a good way to make themselves popular.
In Rome there was a huge stadium called the Circus Maximus, used for
chariot races. Chariot races were held in Britain too, which were thrilling but
very dangerous. Chariots were small two-wheeled carts, driven by one man
and pulled by four galloping horses. They raced around an oval track. There
were often smashes during the seven-lap races.
1. Why did many Romans have little spare time?
2. What is an amphitheatre?
3. How did actors show whether their characters were happy or sad?
4. What is a chariot?
5. Why do you think putting on free shows could help to make an emperor
more popular?
6. Why do you think that gladiator fights no longer happen today?
“Speech Marks”
We use speech marks when we are writing to show what somebody has said. It is very important to also write who has been talking.
Example :
I love
this book
Put the speech marks in the correct places in the sentences
below:
1) What time is it? asked Angel.
2) I want chicken for dinner, said Monica.
3) Can I play on the computer Mum? asked Kayla.
4) I would like an ice cream please, said Sarah.
5) That costs 12 euro said the shop-keeper.
6) Would you like to read a book? asked the teacher.
7) John hit me, said Henry.
8) Where is the cheese? asked Kayleigh.
9) It is time to go to computers, said the teacher.
10) What is 10 + 2? asked Miss Byrne.
11) Hooray shouted the children
Speech marks, commas and full stops

Take a look at the sentences below. Where do they need speech
marks?
Where do they need commas? Where do they need a full stop?
Write the sentences again.
1. I love to eat sweetcorn carrots potatoes and chicken said
