Principal’s Report
Grandparents and Special Friends Day
An open invitation to all grandparents and special
friends of our Year F-6 students to attend the
school and join in with activities in classrooms has
been extended. Join us at school on Monday, 17th
June, between 9.30 and 11.30am in the Silver and
Grey Buildings. Parents’ Club will supply morning
tea around 11am.
Play on the Oval
Over the last few weeks we have had some minor
injuries due to football games being played on the
oval. Please note that staff members patrol the oval
at recess and lunchtimes and students are asked
not to tackle. Older students are also asked not to
become involved with the games of younger
students. We do not want to go down the path of
stopping this play but we will remain vigilant and
again point out to all students the rules governing kicking balls and contact sports.
Exams
Year 11 exams started on Friday, 7th June and will continue through this week. The Year 12 (and
some Year 11) students sit the General Achievement Test on Wednesday, 12th June. Good luck to
all our Senior students as they complete their first semester of work.
Year 12 Parent/Teacher Interviews
Information for parent teacher interviews will arrive home tomorrow with students. These
interviews are only for students studying a Year 12 subject and are designed to inform parents
about what is coming up and strategies for their students to employ as they head into the final
semester. All Year 12 students and those Year 11 students studying a Year 12 subject will be given
the information regarding making online bookings. Please contact the school if you have any
queries.

Ornamental & Fruit Tree Fundraiser
Our annual Fruit and Ornamental Tree Fundraiser is on again for 2019. Please find the current order form at
the end of the Newsletter. We have added a few new varieties of trees plus all the favourites. Please contact
either Kim or Jo if you want a certain tree species that is not on the list. It may be available from the nursery
on request. Trees are normally delivered to the school around late July. Trees are always of high quality and
low cost – a great opportunity to begin an orchard or enhance your home garden.
This year funds raised will assist in purchasing our new football goal posts for the school oval.
For any further queries please feel free to contact either Jo (0408 578 211) or Kim (0447 554 203)
Ten read-aloud commandments by Mem Fox
1. Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud. From birth! 2. Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand
stories before they can begin to learn to read. Or the same story a thousand times!
3. Read aloud with animation. Listen to your own voice and do not be dull, or flat, or boring. Hang loose and be loud, have fun and laugh a lot.
4. Read with joy and enjoyment: real enjoyment for yourself and great joy for the listeners 5. Read the stories that your child loves, over and over, and over again, and always read in the same ‘tune’ for
each book: i.e. with the same intonations and volume and speed, on each page, each time.
CANTEEN CLOSURE The school canteen will be closed on Monday, 17th June. No food or drinks will be available on
this day (including lunch orders) at recess or lunchtime.
-
6. Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say nursery rhymes in a bouncy way;
or be noisy together doing clapping games
7. Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books for young children, and make sure the books are really short. 8. Play games with the things that you and the child can see on the page, such as letting kids finish rhymes, and
finding the letters that start the child’s name and yours, remembering that it’s never work, it’s always a
fabulous game.
9. Never ever teach reading, or get tense around books. 10. Please read aloud every day because you just adore being with your child, not because it’s the right thing to
do.

Granites
On Monday, 27th and Tuesday, 28th of May the Year 8 Outdoor Education class rode out to the Granites. The
weather didn’t treat us overly well and we rode into a headwind the entire way out and back in as well. The
students enjoyed camping in their swags or tents, cooking in the fire or trangias (cooking stove), scrambling
over rocks, looking for caves and hidey holes and having a go on the slackline set up. Well done to everyone
for your efforts. Thank you to Adrian Grogan for riding out with the students, Peter Nickless and Tom
Bleicher for being the support vehicle drivers and staying overnight respectively and Hayden Rowley for
assisting with camp set up. Here are the student comments about the trip:
“Overall it was pretty good, the ride out there was very hard with head winds but the ride back was chill”-
Bridie Doyle I enjoyed the ride overall on the way there although there was a lot of headwind and side wind but the way
back was much calmer”- Jesse Rye
“The camping bit was fun just not the riding. We had head winds the whole way and it was freezing cold”-
Grace Hall
“I enjoyed the ride home as it was faster and there was less wind”- Griffin Lanyon
“I think riding to the Granites and camping overnight was a fun experience. I would recommend it to anyone
that enjoys being outside”- Emma Zanker
“The ride was hard”- Alyssa Boyd
“Camp was fun, all the rock climbing, views, animals and having a good time with my friends”- Jacob
Mulquiny
“It was cold, wet and windy but we had a good time”- Phoebe Malone
“The Granites trip was very cold and the rock climbing was quite fun”- Carissa Haw
“One of the best parts was when we told campfire stories after tea”- Charlotte Alison
“Camp was fun but I think we needed more practise on the riding. The camping and cooking was really good
too”- Zarlie Featherby
“Camp was fun and cold. The rock climb was the best and the ride was cold and a little bit hard”- Tom
Potter
“Overall I think that camp was good and the wind was a pain when we were riding and it’s a good idea not
to leave stuff out at night because it will get wet”- Kobie Streader
“The camp was good but it was cold and wet and the ride was tough because we had a head wind. It was
great and I would do it again if weather was better”- Frasier Holland
“It was freezing cold and really wet when we were setting up our swags. We had a head wind the whole time
we were riding to and from the Granites”- Annie Perryman
“I can’t say much because I could not ride but the stuff I did was pretty good”- Zac Mayberry
“The Granites camp was cold and everyone was tired from riding. I was surprised at how many graves there
were at the cemetery”- Emma Gawne

Foundation to Yr.6 Hockey Program
Over the past three weeks, students from Foundation to Year 6 have had the opportunity to receive
professional hockey coaching from Ellie Reid of Birchip - Watchem Hockey Club. Students have focused on
everything from grip and stance, pushing trapping and tackling, whilst engaging in games and activities to
promote development of skills. Some of our older students have even played a game of hockey 7’s. All
students have engaged very well with the sessions and it has been fantastic to see the energy and enthusiasm
from students involved in the program and the subsequent improvement in all students has been great. Thank
you must go to the classroom teachers who have accompanied them and assisted with the operations of the
