Queen Mary I

(Bloody Mary)

Early Life

• Mary born in February 18 1516 in Greenwich.

• Daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

• When Mary’s parents were happily married Mary was heir to the throne.

Succession to the Throne

• When King Henry VIII died, Mary was second in line to the throne and so her brother Edward became King Edward whom was physically weak.

• In 1553 Edward died.• Mary was next in line for

the throne of England.

Lady Jane Grey • Lady Jane Grey was a

noblewoman who took the crown of England before Mary could.

• She had a weak claim to the throne.

• She ruled for nine days.• Mary had Lady Jane Grey

executed to prevent any possible power struggle, and that’s where Mary got her official name from “Bloody Mary”.

Mary’s Reign• She reigned as Queen of

England from July 19, 1553 until her death on November 17, 1558.

• She married King Phillip of Spain.

• She tries to turn England back to Roman Catholicism because her half brother Edward brought Protestantism in England.

• She burnt over 280 Protestants because of her Catholic beliefs, this helped add to her name of

Bloody Mary.

Her Significance to History

• Mary was central to the struggle between Protestants and Catholics in the Tudor Period.

• The first female monarch of England.• She formed European links with Spain

(although unpopular).• She was involved with Lady Jane Grey and

Elizabeth I, the three of them powerful women at the heart of England and Europe.
