Biotic and Abiotic Things

Objectives1. Differentiate living and non-living

things

2. Discuss the characteristics of living things

What are living things? The things we see around can be divided into two groups.

Biotic and AbioticClick each tab to view what living things and non-living things are.

What are living things? The things we see around can be divided into two. Living and non-living things. Click each tab to learn what living things and non-living things are.

Non-living things can be divided into two.1. The things that were once a part of a living

thing. For example: coal, paper2. The things that were never a part of a living

thing. For example: stones, water, air

What are living things? The things we see around can be divided into two. Living and non-living things. Click each tab to learn what living things and non-living things are.

Characteristics of living things include growth and development, reproduction, movement, response to stimulus, and metabolism.

Cells

All living things are made of cells.Unicellular – one cellMulticellular – many cells

Levels of Organization:atoms, molecules, cell, tissue, organ, system,

organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere

All living things have the ability move. The movement can be internal or external.

The ability to undergo chemical reactions to convert food into energy.

Growth means becoming larger and complicated.

• Life span• Life expectancy • Life cycle

Life span – how long an organism lives

Life expectancy – the average length of time within a population

Life cycle - the complete succession of changes undergone by an organism during its life

Living things react to touch, light, heat, cold, and sound.

Changes (stimulus) cause an organism to react (response).

Response to Stimuli• Tropism – a plant’s growth response

toward to away from a stimulus.Geotropism, phototropism, thigmotropism, hydrotropism

• Adaptations – in response to their environment, species evolve, or change over time.

Reproduction is the process of creating a new organism like itself.

ReproductionAsexual – One cell can split into two to make a new organism

Sexual – Two cells share DNA to make a new organism

Population

All members of one species in a particular area.

A species is a group of individuals that can reproduce offspring.

Community

All the different organisms that live together in an area and interact.

Within a community, there are many populations.

EcosystemAll the biotic and abiotic things that working together as a functional unit.  Ecosystems will fail if they do not remain in balance.

Within an ecosystem, there are many habitats.

BiomeLarge regions of the world with similar plants, animals, and other living things that are adapted to the climate.

It is made up of similar ecosystems.

BiosphereAll the environments on earth that are inhabited by life.

People that study how living things interact with one another and with their environment is called ecology.
