As we have learned, cancer is caused by mutations occurring in genes that make proteins that are involved in maintaining a healthy cell cycle. For this reason, cancer is described as a genetic disease.

Epidemiological study of cancer shows that in countries with high rates of some types of cancers, not all people living in the same environment develop that cancer. In fact, in a family of four, only one individual may develop cancer while others do not.

According to the American Cancer Society’s Global Cancer Facts & Figures report published in 2011, external causes of cancers include environmental factors such as tobacco, chemicals, radiation and infectious organisms; internal causes include inherited mutations. The chance that an individual will develop cancer in response to a particular environmental agent depends on several interacting factors —how long and how often a person is exposed to a particular substance, his/her exposure to other agents, genetic factors, diet, lifestyle, health, age, and gender.

What biological events or processes contribute to genetic variation that could make one individual more susceptible to developing cancer than another?

Write an argument to persuade another biologist that your claim is valid and acceptable. As you write your argument, remember to do the following:

State the claim you are trying to support including at least 3 biological events or processes that contribute to genetic variation.

Include genuine evidence (facts, models, statistics, diagrams) For each process identified, justify why the evidence is relevant and why it provides adequate

support for the claim. Include appropriate and relevant scientific vocabulary to enhance your response.
