Knossos?

Answer

• Sir Arthur Evans was the man that found the palace of Knossos. Describe at least three (3) features of the palace at Knossos.

Competition

• The Minoans gain some competition. What type of competition do you think the Minoans were facing? Explain.

Mycenaean Civilization

• The Mycenaean civilization originated in the southern grasslands of Russia. They were a small group of people that traveled west and settled in Europe. The Peloponnesus of Greece.

Mycenaean Kingdoms

• The Mycenaean palaces were called fortress-palaces. They would build their palaces on top of hills so that they would have a vantage point to view invaders.

Times of Crisis

• During times of crisis, the farmers from outside the city walls would take shelter within the city walls.

Megaron

• The chief feature of the palace was the Megaron. It was a square room with a fire place located in the center. It was the place where the king would hold important meetings.

Mycenaean Estates

• The Mycenaean civilization divided their land into estates. Estates were usually farmed by tenants, or people that live on and work another persons land.

Pay for Protection

• Land owners would pay the king by giving him horses, crops, and chariots, in exchange for protection from invaders.

Herders and Hunters

• The Mycenaean culture were predominately herders but they also relied on their hunting skills to provide food for their families.

Hunting with Hounds

• The Mycenaean’s were one of the first civilization to use dogs in the course of hunting.

Minoans and Mycenaeans

• The Minoans and Mycenaeans began working very closely together in trading agreements. The Mycenaean’s borrowed the Minoan’s ships and imitated their gold and bronze work.

Olives anyone?

• The Mycenaean’s also started growing olives. This was their largest money maker. The Mycenaean’s would make oil for cooking, fuel for lamps, and lotion for the bodies out of olives.

Different from the Minoans

• The Mycenaean’s were different from the Minoans in that they enjoyed fighting. They would use large shields, spears, and swords in battle.

Fight on

• At first the Mycenaean’s liked to fight so much that they would fight against one another. Then they started to build ships and navigate the Mediterranean Sea.

Pirates

• The Mycenaean’s found it easier to fight against another civilization than to work hard at becoming the best. They started to outfit pirates.

Stand Off

• Two super powers of the Mediterranean Sea were going to stand off against one another. One had the goods everyone wanted and the other had the strength everyone wanted.

Take Over

• By about 1400 B.C.E., the Mycenaean’s took over as chief force on the Mediterranean Sea.

Closing Question

• Write this down in your notebooks:

• Why were the Minoans taken over by the Mycenaeans?

Closure
