‘Twas The Night Before Christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas,
He lived all alone.
In a one bedroom house made of
Plaster and stone
I had come down the chimney
With presents to give.
And to see just who
In this home did live.
I looked all about,
A strange sight I did se.
No tinsel, no presents,
Not even a tree.
No stocking by mantle,
Just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung pictures
Of far distant lands.
With medal and badges,
Awards of all kings.
A sober thought
Came through my mind.
For this house was different,
It was dark and dreary.
I found the home of a soldier,
Once I could see clearly.
They all enjoyed freedom
Each month of the year,
Because of the soldiers,
Like the one lying here.
I couldn’t help wonder,
How many lay alone.
On a cold Christmas Eve
In a land far from home.
The very thought
Brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees
And started to cry.
The soldier awakened
And I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry,
This life is my choice;
I fight for freedom,
I don’t ask for more,
My life is my God,
My country, my corps.”
The soldier rolled over
And drifted to sleep
I couldn't control it
I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours,
So silent and still
And we both shivered
From the cold night’s chill.
I didn’t want to leave
On that cold, dark night
This guardian of honor
So willing to fight.
Then the soldier rolled over,
With a voice soft and pure,
Whispered, “carry on Santa,
Its Christmas Day, All is secure.”
One look at my watch,
And I knew he was right.
“Merry Christmas my friend,
And to all a Good Night.”
This poem was written by a Marine
stationed in Okinawa Japan. The
following is his request:
PLEASE, would you do me the kind
favor of sending this to as many peo-
ple as you can? Christmas will be
coming soon and some credit is due to
our U.S. service men and women for
our being able to celebrate these fes-
tivities.
Let’s all stop for a moment and re-
member why and how we have the
pleasure and privilege of celebrating
Christmas as we wish. Pray for our
men and women, alive & dead, that
give us this freedom.
The soldier lay sleeping,
Silent and alone.
Curled up on the floor
In this one bedroom home.
The face was so gently,
The room in such disorder.
Not how I pictured
A United States soldier.
Was this the hero
Of whom I’d just read?
Curled up on a poncho,
The floor for a bed?
I realized the families
that I saw this night.
Owned their lives to these soldier
Who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world,
The children would play,
And grownups would celebrate
A bright Christmas day.
Dear Bellevue,
With the arrival of December, we will be
involved in many activities associated with
celebrating Christmas. We all need to be
reminded each year that we should not let
the less important things take precedent
over the most important, and that is the
birth of Jesus. “Christmas” is made up of
two words, “Christ” and “mass”, which
means “the worship of Christ”. If we fail
to worship Christ, then all we’re doing is
observing some holiday when we focus on
ourselves.
One thing I really enjoy during the
Christmas season is the singing of Christ-
mas Carols. How many beautiful Christ-
mas Carols there are. Charles Wesley
wrote “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”,
Martin Luther wrote “Away in a Manger”,
words and music. Isaac Watts wrote
“Joy to the World”, with music by George
F. Handel. The famous Episcopal
preacher, Phillips Brooks, wrote the words
for “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”
My favorite Christmas carol, as I’m
sure it is with many others, is “Silent
Night”. It has been referred to by some
as the “perfect” Christmas song. “Silent
Night was written by a Catholic Priest,
Joseph Mohr, pastor in the Austrian Alps
in the little town of Oberndorf. It was
Christmas Eve, 1818, when he meditated
on the wonderful story of the birth of Christ
and wrote the simple verses of this song. The
next day he took them to the village school-
master, an organist named Franz Gruber, who
prayerfully put them to music that fits them
so quietly and so well. And that night they
had the choir sing it for the first time with
only guitar accompaniment since the organ was
broken. Now, every year at Christmas, mil-
lions rejoice as they sing it.
I want to encourage all of you to attend
the presentation of the Christmas Cantata “ “.
It will be Sunday, December 14 at 10:30am
and again at 6:00pm. Harry, Jan, and the
choir have put in many hours of preparation
and I know all who attend will receive a won-
derful blessing.
Glenda and I wish you all the peace His
love brings at Christmas and always. We hope
all of you and your families have a very joyous
and blessed Christmas.
See you at church Sunday

The Christian does not think God will love us
because we are good, but that God will make
us good because He loves us.

I want to thank everyone that
had a hand in my retirement
party. I really appreciate the love and support that
everyone has shown me during my time here at
Bellevue. My family and myself really enjoyed the
cake (several times over). I will miss you and espe-
cially the great Wednesday night suppers. I really
haven’t had a chance to enjoy “retirement” life, too
much of getting settled in my new home in Byron
& all the things that revolve in making the move.
My deepest appreciation & love,
Pat Crum
To everyone,
Thank you for remembering my mother (Genelle
Oliver). It means a lot of have your gift to the
Building Fund. Our family appreciates all your
thoughts and prayers during this time.
Debbie Oliver and Family
The family of Monroe Cox thanks all of you for
your prayers and kindness. We truly believe
prayers work. I know it did in Daddy’s case. Your
kindness and your prayers have made all the
difference.
