MIXTURES

Blend of 2 or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its own identity and properties

1. Heterogeneous Mixture –NOT UNIFORM throughout

2. Homogeneous Mixture –UNIFORM throughout –Also known as SOLUTIONS

Mixtures do not:

Have constant boiling points

Have constant melting points

(Mostly nitrogen & oxygen)

Separation Methods

Separation Techniques

• Filtration- solid part is trapped by filter paper and the liquid part runs through the paper

• Example: making coffee

Separating precipitate from solution

Separation Techniques

• Decanting- when liquid is poured off after solid has settled to bottom

Separation Techniques

• Centrifuge- machine that spins a sample very quickly so that components with different densities will separate

• Evaporation- where the liquid portion is

evaporated off to leave solid

Example: separating salt and water in salt

water solution

Distillation to separate a pure liquid from dissolved solid impurities which have a very high boiling point.

Separating funnel

A device used to

separate heavy liquid

from lighter liquids

Also used for

extractions of mixture

components based on

solubility.

Separation Techniques

• Paper Chromatography- used to separate mixtures because different parts move quicker on paper than others based on solubility in mobile phase and attraction to stationary phase

• (more info later in lab)
