Behind the Scenes:Arts Education in Burnaby Schools Although these arts events
celebrate the successes of students, we are most proud of what happens behind the scenes,
in our schools’ classrooms. The Burnaby School District has a comprehensive arts
education program for children from kindergarten to grade twelve. We are one of the few districts in the province who have music specialists in all our schools.
Elementary students receive approximately 90 minutes a week of music programming. In grade seven, students
have the opportunity to take beginner band. For students wanting an enrichment experience, there are also five auditioned choirs in the district, three hand bell
choirs and two vocal choirs.
Our secondary programs have a vast range of arts programming. Students may continue to develop their music skills, through choir, concert and jazz bands and/
or full orchestra programs. Besides music, Burnaby secondary schools have dance programs with qualified
dance educators in every site. Visual art, photography (traditional and/or digital) media and drama are also offered at all secondary schools. Several schools offer
intensive arts programs which allow students to gain credits at local colleges.
