Social Development

Is a child able to maintain flexible and harmonious relationships with others in various contexts?

All children at different ages have different levels of:

Social Skills (super important!)

Social Values

Knowledge

It is up to US to stimulate an environment that enables children to trust others (peers & educators) and develop social skills, social values, and knowledge.

Social Development...

What are values?

How we guide ourselves in our daily life

What we feel is socially desirable

Social Development...During social development, when many children are socialized together, children naturally get frustrated:

They get anxious

Physical: punching, kicking, biting, etc.

Verbal: yelling, tantrums, etc.

We need to teach:

Respect

Where/who they can go to for support:

Ex: A special place in the classroom, a walk in the hallway, etc.

Promote acceptance of others

How to manage stress/conflicts/large groups

Social Development...

Skills

1. Social Skills - what we’ve been focusing on

2. Cognitive Skills

3. Motor Skills

4. Speech and Language Skills

5. Emotional Skills

Activity: Social Development

Social Development Activity

Situational Crisis!

Emotional Development

Children need to feel secure/safe wherever they are FIRST

Make your classroom a safe environment

Without a safe environment, everything else is lost

Trust

Relationships

Self-esteem

Success does not exist without safety

Once safety is established, build a trusting relationship with your students!

Be interested in your students!!!

Emotional Development

Trusting relationship leads to:

Children explore the environment

Freedom to say what they want/need to

Allows the teacher to always be aware of what is going on with their students

Emotional Development

Enables you to help children identify their emotions:

“It looks like you are proud of yourself”

“I think that you are angry”

Show them how to express things they are unsure of

Emotional Development

How are we directly helping our students’ development?

Developing the ability to express and control their emotions

Develop the ability to change and transition into new situations

Help them develop and reinforce their self-esteem

Offer support to children who are shy

Emotional Development...

What other important aspects of these children's lives do we help to shape?

Gender identity - not always addressed at home

Values of Quebec society

Help children develop resilience
